The article listed multiple countries....

but seasonal flu is OBVIOUSLY down because we are all practicing measures to reduce flu spread.
Lolzy.
If we could reduce flu by 95-98% by masks (hygiene has probably declined back to closer to pre-Covid levels), we make them required.
No one seriously thinks that social distancing and masks reduces illness by 95%. Maybe 50%? Not 95%.

no, but the majority of america is compelled by government to engage in at least some form of traditionally effective influenza prevention like mask wearing and social distancing.
Theres goddam plexiglass and hand sanitizer everywhere you go. Control measures in Schools, retailers, government buildings, restaurants, etc... Mask mandates all over the country. You really think this doesnt reduce seasonal flu transmission. what planet is this?

people globally are doing more then they ever have to prevent influenza spread. Are we really shocked that seasonal flu numbers are way down?
No, not shocked at all. The flu can’t be used for political gain.
But down? Come the frick on! 98% doesn’t seem a little off to you?its essentially been wiped from the Earth?

No one has argued it doesn't reduce transmission.

its october hoss.
98% positivity rate reduction on a baseline of less than 400 positive cases ytd 19. Its too early to start cooking up conspiracy theories.

It’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s science.

look at my response to 808. The data is way too shallow to interpret anything just yet. The flu season has barely started and we are talking about dozens of cases... dozens
Posted on 10/26/20 at 12:34 pm to Vacherie Saint
Hundreds. But sure. It’s early.

Since you didn't read the article:
Again, no one is saying that COVID measures had no affect on flu transmission, we're merely raising the suggestion that those measures didn't single handedly reduce transmission by 96-99%.
quote:
In the Southern Hemisphere, where the flu season happens during our summer months, the WHO data suggests it never took off at all.
In Australia, just 14 positive flu cases were recorded in April, compared with 367 during the same month in 2019 – a 96 per cent drop.
By June, usually the peak of its flu season, there were none. In fact, Australia has not reported a positive case to the WHO since July.
In Chile, just 12 cases of flu were detected between April and October. There were nearly 7,000 during the same period in 2019.
And in South Africa, surveillance tests picked up just two cases at the beginning of the season, which quickly dropped to zero over the following month – overall, a 99 per cent drop compared with the previous year.
In the UK, our flu season is only just beginning. But since Covid-19 began spreading in March, just 767 cases have been reported to the WHO compared with nearly 7,000 from March to October last year.
Again, no one is saying that COVID measures had no affect on flu transmission, we're merely raising the suggestion that those measures didn't single handedly reduce transmission by 96-99%.

You see stuff like this "flu cases down 98%" and then it brings to mind the articles and stuff I've seen lately claiming that these covid test kits are kicking back false positives for the seasonal flu.
I'm not a medical professional like some of you guys here are, but it sure seems to me like the seasonal flu virus is being absorbed into the Covid case numbers.
But I suppose that would be a crazy conspiracy theory. I mean, who would stand to gain from such a thing?

This is a much better argument than the “we are all wearing masks” argument you were making.

agreed. Science tells us that these measures dramatically reduce influenza spread. Science also tells us that incredibly small data sets are fricking worthless for interpreting the types of conclusions being drawn here.

these are long standing preventative measures for flu transmission. Thats why there being used from the beginning. Mask wearing, for example, is common throughout Asia. We've just never practiced these measures, globally to such a degree before.
Cite the evidence. Here are the 10 BEST studies that existed prior to this year that the WHO incorporated in their NPI pandemic flu guidelines that were published October 2019. NO SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN INFLUENZA LIKE ILLNESS.

The government is not coding seasonal flu as covid.
I'm not saying they are.

Flu is down because the whole planet is locked tf down.
Want to find a better reason for this drop than NPIs? Look into viral interference.

This is what some here want to believe. Even if you used last years YTD flu positives, we are talking about less than 400 cases. It doesnt account for the uptick.
I think what we do have to look out for is deaths. I dont believe you need a positive test to register a covid death. If the seasonal flu death rates plummet and covid deaths spike after we are well into flu season, then I'll start getting angry.

I'll quote from the article as well since it appears you didn't read it and are ignoring it.

Cite all the "proof" that these are actually effective in reducing infections.
I'll wait.

Wait, we werent using mask wearing, social distancing, quarantines, etc... during the summer?!?! In places like Australia? lol again, less than 400 total cases.
The article also has like 4 paragraphs outlining how covid measures are reducing flu spread. why didnt you put those in there too?
