OT lawyers can chime in but I thought there were several cases where the woman was able to keep the engagement ring after they broke up (before the wedding) bc it was given as a gift for birthday or Christmas.

It’s been a few years but yes that’s my recollection. The argument against it is more practical though, she’s going to be pissed she doesn’t have a separate special day. It’s just dumb all around

That is simply insane. I found a simple acquamarine ring I would love to have from Tiffany's for $175.00.
You sound like my wife. Bought her a very nice dinner ring that set me back 5K. She wasn't happy cause I spent that much. But also I had went out and bought myself a 30K boat. Might of been that.

He can get the ring back by simply placing a contract along side the ring and have her sign it. That would make for a memorable proposal ceremony!

Yeah I paid like $400 for my wife’s engagement and wedding rings combined. She married me. Anyone who pays over about $1K for a ring is an absolute simp and any woman who would get bent out of shape about how much her ring costs you don’t want to be married to her anyway.

Never heard of this before. I will pass along the info.

I'd take that 10K and buy a smaller boat! At least it's something useful and fun to enjoy. I could buy a tiny home and travel with 10K. I'd worry more about losing that ring every time I wore it.

Tell him to pick another date. Picking her birthday so he can save a few bucks not buying a gift is selfish. He’s also tying all of her future birthdays to her wedding proposal. Your friend might not be aware but it’s kind of a big fricking deal to women, so perhaps he should think about allowing it to be its own separate day.

Should of.

Gifts are kept if you divorce. Listen to the other people that posted to not give her the ring as a birthday gift. Do. Not. Do. This. Yes, she is sweet now but heaven forbid you divorce.

Why propose on a birthday?
Posted on 10/11/20 at 9:29 am to nugget
that’s the problem. now she’s going to be impossible to please on future birthdays bc no matter how much thought/effort he makes, the engagement ring/proposal birthday surprise cannot be topped.

You don’t tell them how much the ring costs

Paid around 1K for the wife's ring, but that was 42+ years ago.
