No offense, but I call BS on your friend. Pre-9/11 we landed at the FBO in Gulfport. Two very tiny (not much larger than a car) NASA jets landed right behind us. Our pilot is retired USAF and told us that those jets were some of the fastest, and they made it from Houston to Gulfport in 18 minutes.

Those were T-38 talons. They are trainer aircraft that the Air Force use for supersonic pilot training, although they are being slowly phased out. NASA used to use them as chase planes, and i guess still do to a lesser extent. The NASA versions are still occasionally seen at GPT and Stennis Airport (HSA) going to or from Ellington Field in Houston (EFD)

USAF has training wings of T-38's at Columbus Air Force base in North East Mississippi.
