The bottom line is that you have to be multiple in order to win consistently. Any single scheme can be defended. Unfortunately we weren't multiple on defense Saturday. Whether that was due to lack of talent because of player losses, lack of practice time due to COVID and everything else this off season, or lack of coaching scheme/ability, Bo needs to be able to use multiple or or other teams will use Leach's blueprint to beat us.

They win the game if Pelini makes any kind of fricking adjustment. MSU ran nothing but man beaters with picks and rubs on nearly every play. Before we reached halftime it was very evident man coverage couldn't possibly succeed.
I don't care who was or wasn't playing - Pelini did not put them in the best position to succeed. Like he was Mike Martz, he refused to adapt to personnel on hand and tried to force them to adapt to his system, instead of adapting the system to the strengths of your players... or at the very least fricking protecting where they are most weak.
And if YOU, Lester Earl, could not tell before halftime that Leach was using plays specifically designed to break man coverage and that Bo Pelini never adjusted, then YOU don't know what the hell you are talking about... you don't know football.
Costello was damn near Brees/Burrow accurate... having played 3 seasons already, he was quick and decisive with where he wanted to go with the ball. LB's and DB's were getting picked nearly every other play, leaving guys across the middle on simple slant routes wide the frick open, repeatedly, in every quarter. Mississippi fricking State. I don't give a damn who plays, if Bo Pelini never makes an adjustment, you would have seen the same result.
Leach's route concepts are neither new, complex, multiple, nor revolutionary. There's a reason after all these year's he is coaching Mississippi State. Bo Pelini just proved there's an even greater reason he was coaching for Podunk U last year. He should really be coaching for Les Miles. The fact Ed didn't step in and force at least one fricking zone play makes him equally complicit.

like zone is easy to install with greenhorns.........especially with limited practice
ask aranda or chavis how tough it is.

I get the “you gotta try something different” argument but people who think zone would have fixed all our problems are assuming a lot.

I wasn't a BO fan the last time he was here...wish he had looked at someone else

Sort of like when O took over Canada’s playcalling? How did that work out?

It’s like he watched more film of Costello at Stanford than of Leach’s offense. We looked like we were trying to attack a David Shaw offense.

There is nearly 25 years of info on Leach’s offense. It the same plays over and over. Not being prepared with adjustments is the coaches fault.
Exactly. Inexcusable. This was like Les Miles in the NC vs Alabama.
When it is evident to every soul that shite has zero chance of working, keep repeating it and leaving your players in the worst possible position to succeed.
When the opponent doesn't have to guess what you are doing, has no hesitation and knows how to break what you will do and proceeds to do just that, but you decide to stick with your plan because you believe almost is a better alternative than admitting your plan is shite, you deserve to be coaching for the University of Dumfrickistan.

A good way to slow down some of those fricking crossing routes would be to get some hitters picking those guys up in zone coverage.
It's an extremely effective route for YAC, but it does put the receivers in a position to get blasted at times.

They didn't think they could execute zone with the personnel they had on the field.
If you want to point criticism, that's where it lies...being unprepared.
So all the players who aren't true freshman/transfers who've spent all their previous years practicing and learning zone defense under Dave Aranda, who was known as The Professor and made his living doing more with less - they all the sudden don't know how to play the most basic fricking zone schemes? bullshite.
When players are getting picked and rubbed on man beater after man beater simple slants and crossing routes, and the coach can't determine zone might give this group of personnel a fighting chance against an offense that for 20+ years has had the least success against zone, you shouldn't be getting paid millions. Period.
It's one thing to believe you have the plan and personnel to get adequate pressure and play nothing but man because you think you have superior athletes, but when it becomes evident on that particular night you are fricking wrong, you better have a plan B.
It wasn't necessary to play 100% zone, but hell, to let the same 3 plays eat your arse all night because you refuse to stop playing man is insanity.

No doubt the blueprint was there on how to stop the Leach offense and how to adjust to its wrinkles. Bo didn't do his homework, I trust that won't happen again.

so now they want to talk about all of the inexperience out there which is all well and good....had you not spent weeks telling us how great and advanced this defensive unit is.
Didn't I tell people on here not to believe that crap? I can't believe the stuff people fall for and now they backtrack with the youth comment like that wasn't a problem before. Even with Stingley, you don't take off all that yardage and points we gave up. We had all our LBs and other DBs when his comments were made.

Jay Ward and Evans were not even scheduled to play, per O.
Flott was getting embarrassed too though, and Ricks played decent but gave up some plays too.
With Stingley added this is the defense O was praising and throwing shade at Aranda over. That's my problem. He talked all that shite and it was not backed up in the slightest. Even if Stingley is good for 150 yards and two TD difference, you're still talking about close to 490 yards and 30 points given up by a defense that was supposedly "better than any point of time last year".
