The development was far worse than the recruiting.
Please say that again!!! Many choose to ignore that fact and dump on the QBs who chose to come to LSU. Some for nefarious reasons of being against dual threat QBs at LSU. For Less Miles, it was a combination of lack of QB development AND his QB unfriendly, risk adverse, antiquated, 19th century offense.
Joe Burrow, in the still Miles’ influenced QB unfriendly 2018 offense was a 50+% passer projected to be drafted in the later rounds of the NFL draft. His redshirt junior year as a starter was not much better, numbers wise, than Brandon Harris’ true sophomore year as a starter. Then under a new aggressive, QB friendly, 21st century offense, he has arguably the greatest year ever as a college QB, wins the Heisman and goes 1st in the NFL draft.
QBs under Mike Leach are prolific because of his QB friendly offensive system and QB development. Not because he is such a great evaluator and recruiter of QBs. His QBs were no higher rated than those recruited by Miles. He developed them and had an offense they could thrive in. Two thing Miles didn’t. Name one Leach QB that has gone on to have similar success in the NFL. There aren’t any. Minshew might.
The QBs recruited by Les Miles weren’t the problem. It was lack of development AND a QB unfriendly offensive system. Two runs into a stacked box, a Hail Mary to the sidelines, punt. Rinse and repeat.
