The AG said there was an independent, civilian witness very close to the apartment who heard the announcement.

I don't know if we'll ever know more about the witness than that, but I don't think doubting an otherwise apparently honest and respected official like the AG is a good look.

I get not trusting what the police have to say because they have skin in the game (their own).

I would think if there was no corroborated announcement, the AG wouldn't have corrupted the investigation by generating that false witness.

But that's my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
