Yes, because there has never been a need for one like this. That really means it was never financially worth it before Covid 19

Which is exactly why I won’t take a rushed vaccine for something that has a less than 0.1% chance it killing me, and I have a less than 1% chance of contracting it.
ETA
I’ll take the second or third version of it once it’s been tested and proven. I’m not taking the first one.

A vaccine for the common cold would be a worldwide blockbuster. Its never been financially worth it because its proven impossible to do thus far.

The common cold is usually a rhinovirus. The other common cold coronaviruses aren't serious to warrant the millions of dollars it takes to develop a vaccine.

Do some research on Dr. Alton Ochsner giving his grandchildren a polio vaccine. It killed his grandson.

So while it could be a reaction to the vaccine, it could just be random illness.
Well frick. I already got my pitchfork out.
What should we do now?

I would be more concerned if we never got a story like this.

You do realize that 30,000 people will have been given the vaccine before even the very first patient outside of the clinical trial could receive it right?

30,000 is a drop in the bucket. It tells you nothing about real world safety.
It took 20 million people to take Vioxx before it was pulled from the market after causing 38,000 deaths from myocardial infarction.
How many terrified people do you think would line up to take a vaccine in the first 6 months it was available in this crisis?
My guess is 500 million worldwide.
If it is 50% safer than Vioxx it would only cause about 475,000 deaths.
Roll it out boys!
There is money to be made!

The world we live in today...
One potential, unverified, adverse reaction in a clinical trial leads to:
"SEE! THIS IS WHY I'LL NEVER TAKE A VACCINE, THEY WERE ALL LYING!!!!!"
Un-fricking-real the idiocy that pervades our society. Can anyone wait for anything nowadays, without instantly going to an extreme? Apparently not.

It does, actually. The trials are powered specifically to assess both efficacy and safety in large populations.

Nice jump to conclusions.
Never said I would not take a vaccine. Just not one rushed to market until it’s been proven to be safe over several years. Especially when the virus itself is almost never fatal.
But you do that straw man dance.

I wasn't talking about you specifically, even though I think I replied to you, but others have said as much in this thread and others.

The common cold is mostly cussed by rhinoviruses not a corona virus. Way to many strains of common cold to make a vaccine.

Cite for this? Not in that story.

Like we should waste the vaccine on you troglodytes...let’s let it get to South Louisiana last, really preserve the worlds brain trust.
