back story as I'm sure this has elicited quite the . Herman "Butch" Duhe was a 21 year old junior quarterback from New Orleans poised to make a run at the starting job for the eventual 1970 SEC Champs. It was initially believed that his death was the result of blows to the head in practice. He had complained of headaches most of that summer and the coroner ruled his death wasn't a football injury but a cyst deep inside his brain. Devastating for the LSU community.

Damn if LSU hasn't had the most tragic events taking athletes too soon. The list is long.
Duhe
Mike Miley
Carl Otis Trimble
Wally Pontiff
Don Redden
Toby Caston
Pistol Pete
Eric Andolsek
Bo Rein
Wayde Sims
Those are just off the top of my head. Crazy.

These threads pop up frequently it seems, and that’s a good thing. It’s important to remember what these guys did, and also to understand how much of a gift life really is.

That was a sad, sad day. I was getting ready to turn 12 years old, but my family knew his family very well in Kenner. We were really looking forward to seeing him lead the Tigers.

I was 8 and remember. It sort of resonated all through the SEC like, wow, if this can happen at LSU it can happen to us.

His parents and my grandparents were good friends. They’d go camping together all the time. He actually dated my aunt a little in high school. Messed up how unfair life is at times

When I was a kid, I was nominated for the Butch Duhe Award, which was an annual award given to a youth football player who played for Kenner Rec.
Didn't win, but they had an awards banquet and I got a plaque for being nominated. Was a pretty neat experience for a 12 year old.
This was about 30 years ago, I don't know if they still even do that.

Mr Herman and Miss Marion were people I knew well back in Kenner. Tremendous people!

Miss Marion Duhe got pissed off at the city and took Butch’s name off it. It was changed to the All American Awards or something similar in the 90’s. Last kid I nominated pitched in the Majors! Pretty proud of that.

I saw an interview once with Terry Bradshaw. He said Trey Prather was the best QB to come out of Woodlawn High School in Shreveport. High praise considering it also produced Joe Ferguson.

I was on my way to LSU my first day of my freshmen year and heard on the radio.
