We finished 4th (albeit barely) in franks first season as gaffer in the premier league with a cast of poor investments and youth squad promotions on the back of losing hazard.

Despite covid, we go out and spend like a boss to bring in more than a half dozen solid investments (perhaps even rice as well).

Injuries have prevented us from fielding our best eleven thus far, and that eleven hasn’t even trained together either.

Plus it’s still really early, and given the major influx and overhaul it’s going to take some time to gel. We saw the same thing last year.

What we didn’t see last year were these mental lapses leading to goals though. Inexcusable at this level, but without those the score lines feel differently. If Tammy could have hit one of those two first attempts or Timo avoids the woodwork, we still could have won yesterday.

It’s not that there isn’t bad. There is, but it’s not all bad. Nor can it be expected to get fixed immediately either. Frank is still absolutely the man for this job imo, and I still think he can do it.

It’s going to take another two windows at least to fix the squad, but I’m encouraged by how the club appears to be going about doing business now. Swapping Emanolo for Cech seems to be paying dividends.

It’s going to be a long road to challenge city and Liverpool, but in the short term I think we are taking the steps to get there. That’s all you can ask really. I’m not dissatisfied with that. The results will improve. Stay tuned.

Always blue.

I find that soccer fans are even more reactionary than other sports yet the difference in a W, D, or L is marginal from one game to the next. It takes longitudinal time series to actually see how a team is performing yet fans quickly rotate from one end of the spectrum to the other based on the most recent performance.

Point blank, Frank and the team overachieved last year and were fortunate that typical perennial powers sucked and allowed us to get 4th in the league.

If we get the squad to full strength and don’t see a string of not only positive results but higher quality play then I’ll become more critical.

Analyzing performance based on wins and losses is myopic...it’s about the process that drives to the results that I care about the most. Control the ball, limit mental errors, create opportunities, movement and interplay, etc. are the indicators we need to see.

City isn’t looking great right now and they have their own injury issues. TOT will be without Son on Tuesday when Blues visit Hotspur, and because they’ve looked average so far we may have a shot. Blues need to get fit and add Rice ASAP.
