They hated the later series so much they vowed to do the exact opposite of everything that series did.
They hated game of thrones or Korra? Not sure why the creators would hate the show that they sketched out in totality while producing the first season and continue to write graphic novel continuations for.

No, they hated Harry Potter. They were huge fans of Game of Thrones and emulated their characters on the material. They’d tell their writers to not do Harry Potter bullshite. Nick told them to make a Harry Potter series, and they agreed but closetly hated the series and proceeded to do the opposite of what they thought JKR would do. They thought that Harry was an awful character, that Ron was worthless, and the universe made absolutely no sense. They were perplexed by the Wizarding World economy and didn’t see how it was possible how the Weasleys were poor. They also really hated Quidditch seeing that the sport by default just made the main character more important and JKR didn’t fathom the point of sports. Mike and Bryan’s start of their friendship was their mutual obsession over MMA, kung fu, and football. They may not look like it, but both are sports fanatics and MMA experts, which is why the fight scenes in the shows were so damn good.
