Avatar:TLA Creators are Leaving the Netflix Adaptation

This was posted 20 minutes ago to Michael Dante DiMartino’s official Facebook page.
Sounds like there were creative differences between them and Netflix. I hope it’s cancelled, I was already skeptical of a live action adaptation, now I’m firmly against one.

An open letter to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans: Many of you have been asking me for updates about the Avatar live-action Netflix series. I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production.
When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.
Look, things happen. Productions are challenging. Unforeseen events arise. Plans have to change. And when those things have happened at other points during my career, I try to be like an Air Nomad and adapt. I do my best to go with the flow, no matter what obstacle is put in my way. But even an Air Nomad knows when it’s time to cut their losses and move on.
I started to reevaluate what is truly important in my life and what I wanted to do with what’s left of it. I took some advice from Uncle Iroh. I looked inward and started asking myself the big question: “Who are you and what do you want?”
I also sought wisdom from Stoic philosophers who were big on differentiating between what is within our control and what isn’t. I realized I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded. So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I've ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.
And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.
I also want to be clear that this doesn't mean the end of my involvement in the Avatar universe. These stories and characters are important to me and the renewed interest and excitement in Avatar and Korra has been inspiring to see.
Writing this letter has left me with a very heavy heart. I know many of you will be disappointed and frustrated by this news. I get it. I share your disappointment and frustration. I also recognize this creative setback is small compared to the problems we’re all facing as a society right now.
Thankfully, Iroh offered some wisdom for that, too: “Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel. You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving you will come to a better place.”
May we all keep moving and come to a better place.
Thanks for reading and for your continued enthusiasm for the Avatar universe.
With gratitude, Michael Dante DiMartino

Going by netflix's track record, Ang will be black, Kitara will be white, and fire nation will be white supremacists.

Are those kinds of things Netflix driven, or giving producers freedom and the producers leaning that way? I would imagine if Netflix is skewing the creative direction of a production, it's more about appealing to an international audience than catering to US PC. They are up to 193 million subscribers worldwide. "Only" 73 million of those are from the US.

Thats really disappointing. TLA is a top 3 all time favorite show for me, and I have a ton of respect for the creators. Without them, my expectations have dropped. I was looking forward to seeing what they could do with full creative control, live action and Netflix budget

Why do a live action of something already done ? just do new stories

I don't have specific links on hand, but I remember reading they were thinking of changing a character and making him/her LGBTQ. Also, the original series is pretty woke against sexism, racism, xenophobia, etc.. so it's not a stretch to believe the creators would have adapted it to a more modern climate with many of those same issues in the daily news cycle.

I hate WOKE culture, cancel culture, ect. I really dont see how you came to this conclusion. Sure, the firebenders were hell bent on world domination and wiped out an entire tribe, but the characters virtually all seem like straight white characters, which is a welcomed departured from forced Woke culture.
Now Korra on the otherhand, would fit your narrative much more closely. I think you are stretching hard to find something if there is anything at all.
Its a spirit based, wisdom, buddhist, chakra-type show about balance and redemption, and its far from WOKE...

You likely don't see it because you watched this series before you were aware of "forced woke culture." It features everything the last guy listed, and literally NONE of the characters are white. Each of the the three main tribes exhibit some level of inherent xenophobia. Katara and Sokka's characterizations are basically a kid-friendly manifestation of anti-sexism.
You note Korra as being different, but the only philosophical difference is the addition of an openly gay character, sort of.
It sounds more like the other things you're labeling as woke probably aren't as woke as whatever YouTube and Twitter idiots you're listening to are telling you.

Then call it off. No interest of seeing it unless Aaron Ehasz becomes the new show runner.

It would not shock me if they wanted to turn Katara and Sokka black, and when they said there are no black people in the Avatar Universe, Netflix disagreed. Going to be the inverse of that film that shall not be mentioned.

There already are LGBT characters in the Avatar universe, but the ones present in TLA seem to be mostly villains. Like Azula does give off some psycho lesbian vibes.

The show is already basically Chinese folklore and is very popular. I don't see how race swapping would give it a more international appeal. If anything it will turn off the Chinese audience. They really don't want to see a black Avatar.

They’re all Asian or Inuit, so there are no black people either. It’s just paying tribute to those cultures really. I don’t see what’s so woke about that part.

If they are trying to appease the Chinese with this shite, burn it to the fricking ground. The show and it’s sequel are implicitly very much against the Chinese government. Like the Dai Li was named after the head of Mao’s secret police. That’d be the equivalent of doing a fantasy version of the United States, have the secret police called the Hoovers, and operate out of a pentagon shaped building. The reference would not be lost.
