someone on fox noted today that a down economy might not a bad thing for hollywood since some people might opt to go to movies to deal with the stress of the rescission and that most families are traveling less this summer due to high energy costs.

Liberals are touting a down economy myth with global warming to destroy america, it's so obvious.

I would tend to think of going to the movies as an inferior substitute.

Why are Americans so obsessed with box office receipts?

I mean, this is the Money Talk board, so obviously, its relevant here. But it gets reported on the news as if it were the weather or last nights football scores. Outside of those with financial interest in the movies - who really cares?

What were the total ticket sales receipts for the LSU football season last year? I'm sure a lot of people know this - but it doesn't get reported along with the news on Tiger football as a normal everyday item of reporting. "Last night, the LSU-Georgia game took in a record $10.0 million in box office and concessions sales, and the score was LSU 27 Georgia 21"

You're right. Its a mass conspiracy to destroy America. You figured it all out. We're all really Communists that were planted here in the 50's.

To what? Opening up my own bat-cave and personally banging Maggie Glyllenhall?

The term is, "Staycation" look it up.

Replacing traveling with local entertainment = box office success.

It gives you an idea of how many people went to a movie.

Every game I have ever watched has announced the attendance to that game.

Which, to be fair, is not the same as gate receipts.

A fairer measure would be how many tickets were sold, not gross receipts. When "Jurassic Park" came out, movie tickets were significantly cheaper.

WTF? Can you really argue that the economy is not down? Not logically.

JP is not even close to the top inflation adjusted movie of all time. Gone with the Wind is the top IA movie ever.

Is inflation adjusted based on actual tickets sold or is it just gross receipts adjusted for CPI?

I think it's based on if a movie had sold as many tickets today as when it was originally released.
