As a cop, I can only try to convey just how wrong this encounter ended and how it doesn’t represent the majority of us.

The officers present should have intervened and prevented the primary officer from remaining on the arrestees neck. They all failed.

It’s not our job to kill, we protect lives. Force should all most never be used on a handcuffed compliant suspect.

These keystone cops make me sick. Truly an embarrassment to the thousands of men and women who serve the public with honesty, restraint, and compassion.

I'll assume you are sincere, and to the extent that is true, I feel sorry for you for the blowback from this you may experience that you don't deserve.

I once had an encounter with a cop who I'm sure was truly simply trying to help me because I was having car trouble. But he was the rare exception and from a generation that is almost all gone from the ranks of the police.

Too many times I've been stopped for nothing but obvious fishing expeditions because I fit some profile (and no, I don't do illegal drugs, drink, smoke, drive like an idiot, etc.) I've seen too many cops ignoring the traffic laws. I've almost been rear ended by two state cops racing down the interstate at what had to be well over 100 and then watched them just sit and wait in line at the exit stop sign; and I could go on and on.

I've seen too many examples, had too much experience, and know of too much other evidence that convinces me that this incident represents a mindset which is the norm rather the exception.

So, I'd be very surprised if you've honestly not observed your colleagues routinely violating the very laws they enforce for no reason other than to raise money, or bullying someone because they were angry that the person didn't roll over and pee on themselves like a submissive puppy. This is a culture which sees itself as above law and "civilians" as cattle to be controlled, rather than fellow citizens. It's not surprising that such a culture produces what happened to get recorded in Minnesota.

This. I was on a firearm forum that had a LOT of cops as members. Someone would occasionally post complaining about a ticket and always got the same response: If you don't like it don't speed. The law is the law, etc etc.

One time someone who was thinking about becoming a cop asked a question to law enforcement: What's your favorite part of the job? It got a lot of responses, and #1 was "being able to drive fast whenever I like" or some variation.

I could list countless examples like that, written directly by cops on an anonymous forum where they could speak their mind with no consequences. That forum changed my perception of them as a group, permanently. Individuals are individuals, but if I don't know you I have zero reason to trust you just because you wear a badge, and in some cases I have good reasons not to.
