The demise of Harley Davidson by TejasHorn
Harley could survive if they would diversify and make different kinds of bikes. 99% of their bikes are too heavy, underpowered, handle like sh!t, and cost 2-3 times what they should. If you look at any Japanese brand, they offer kids bikes, low displacement learner bikes, sportbikes, touring bikes, adventure bikes, retro bikes, motocross bikes, enduro bikes, supermoto bikes ect…Enough choices for young, teen, adult and older riders. Then you have the HD lineup, all overpriced heavy rolling chrome butt jewelry that some mid life crisis guy will blow his 401k wad in order to try to look cool enough to get one last piece of a$$ before his tallywacker quits working. A lot of them are killed because they can't ride, have never ridden, and should have no business on a motorcycle. Now Harley has invested big$$ on an electric bike that goes for 30K. Good luck with selling that to your "niche" of middle age guys wanting to dress like a gay pirate and putt from bar to bar looking like billybadass.
How about making a good bike that is affordable? I guess they will stick with selling tshirts and tassles.

They made their brand synonymous with aging boomers. Aging boomers are not cool.
Part of me says "Woodstock > Fyre Festival and Selma > Kony 2012," but I also know that Boomers have ruined Mustangs for me.

Harleys are too expensive for young people. That's why most people who ride them seem to be retirees.
Same with Corvettes. You rarely see some 30 year old driving a Vette. Its usually a 60 year old with his hair grown out in the back and a satin jacket on.

HOG is up today and has bounced back 25-30% from its bottom.

Like some have said, hardly anyone can relate to the old Hell’s Angels, “I’m a bad arse on a Harley” image. They need to appeal to the modern crowd.

I know a lot of you younger riders look down on leather (for some odd reason) but trust me, if and when you lay that bike down on asphalt and you go sliding a hundred feet down the pavement, that leather will be your best friend.
When you ride you need leather boots, chaps or leather pants, leather jacket, and leather gloves.

Nailed it!
How about dirt bikes or motorcross bikes? Products an entire family could use.

I meant black leather. I ride ATGATT. The textile riding gear is just as good and in some cases better than leather.

That is something HD overlooked and is paying for it.
Back in the 70s and 80s Honda captured numerous future buyers of accords by offering the Civic, a simple and reliable car that later led those owners to stepping up to the Accords and even their Acura line. The US manufacturers treated cars like that with disdain either offering trash models or buying Japanese models and rebadging them.
If Harley Davidson wants to thrive then they have to have something for a new rider to learn on. They need a model that some one going to college or trade school can get around on with a budget. Given HD still has their nose stuck up in the air, I don't see that changing right now.
