Harley-Davidson died when knobs like Darth Vader started buying them for their mid-life crisis and began parading around town like some biker badasses.
I bought my first Harley before I was 30, dumbass.

FWIW, motorcycles in general have become very popular with the hipster-millennial crowd.

Harley's resurgence was on the wave of yuppies, weekend warrior types in the late 80s and 90s.

Working, blue collar, middle class guys. And I’m not taking just bikers. There’s a whole lot of guys and girls who buy and ride motorcycles. A lot of them would love to own a new Harley. But that isn’t realistic to many of them when a new Harley cost as much or even more than their car or truck and there are many other motorcycle options to be had for a fraction of the price of a Harley.

They can buy used ones now.
Harley was dumb to increase production. They are a niche brand that tried to go mainstream. Their pricing alone will keep them from ever being mainstream.

They’re marketing resonates with people who are too dumb to realize they are a walking cliche. Packs of these people are at every mountain road coffee shop standing around with their stupid tshirts. You are not tough because you wear new leather pants once a month when the weather is nice. These people buy motorcycles to enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains yet bother everyone else within 2 miles as they ride by. Atleast the smug nerds in the packs of Teslas don’t make any noise.
I think Southpark had something to do with the HD downfall. Anyone under 40 thinks the same thing when an obnoxious bike drive by.

My brother who is a patent lawyer in a large firm in D.C., rides a 2002 Fatboy as often as he can.
He says that it pisses off some of the soy boys that live in his neighborhood in Reston, VA.

Or they don't care.
Everyone associates with some cliched group.

The Harley Davidson philosophy is pretty much the same as Apple. Their bikes are way overpriced, I don't know how people can afford them.
Their cheap Sportsters run around $13k when a similar bike from the Japanese cost 8 or 9.
Their bigger bikes are well over 20. When a bike costs more than a decent car, it is overpriced for normal people.
I picked up a used Sportster and it's a nice retro/analog bike. Visceral and priced decently on the used market. I don't understand how anyone can justify buying new when there are loads of used low mileage Harleys on the market.
Lots of boomers get buy them new without having ridden before and end up selling because they end up being too scared to ride. It's easy to find them with under 1000 miles on them.
They've got a great dealer network and it is easy to get parts. I'd love to have a Moto Guzzi but try to find a dealer.
I hate to see them go under but their Live Wire electric bike is over 30k and costs more than a Tesla 3. WTF is Harley thinking?

The 883 starts at $9k. The Jap bikes it competes with are better IMO and start out around $1k less, but it's not nearly the gap you're suggesting.

Same for the Jap brands.

It's the Cadillac effect. Higher price = higher demand. Or it was at one time. The perception that the higher price makes you exclusive, but works in reverse.

Maybe so. But Harley requires a costume.

Times have changed. Higher end Harley's attract the same demo Gold Wings do.

It’s not just a costume. If you have ever seen someone who just slid down asphalt in a t-shirt and jeans looks like, you’d understand why so many people on bikes are wearing things like leather chaps and jackets.

Imagine how empty a person must feel to lie about being a three-patcher on the internet.

Harleys are too expensive for young people. That's why most people who ride them seem to be retirees.

That’s what a lot of Harley riders do now. The first Harley I bought back in the 90s was brand new. The last two Harleys I owned (bought in 2014 and 2017) were both used.
