It sounds like the Saints made an offer, Bell wanted more, so the Saints signed Jenkins. Bell’s agent must have overestimated his value in the open market.
Same type of thing with Ingram last year albeit a communication issue. You would have thought Bell and his agent would have seen that and realized the Saints weren't in the mood to frick around, especially after CGJ's Rookie year and Jenkins on the block. Oh well, good luck in Cincy.

t’s about value. I like Jenkins but damn dude got paid
It isn’t a bad contract. I think his guarantee is only like 16 million so saints can get out of it after 2 seasons.

Leadership and experience cost more. We paid it.
I can't imagine a younger secondary in the NFL than the Saints. If not at the top we must be near it.
Anyone have those stats?

Improvement isn’t linear but Bell has improved year over year. Jenkins left here after his age 26 after 5 seasons, but his 6 best seasons were in Philly from age 27 on
So there is certainly a scenario where Bell continues his upward trajectory from age 25 on and Jenkins could begin to decline at age 32, 11 years into his career

Honestly I’d have easily paid 8 for Vonn and not blinked so this feels like a major miss
Jenkins is old and will likely be bad within 1-2 years. Marcus is already bad. CGJ is good but he’s more of a nickel/slot than a safety. Suddenly we have no future at safety. Probably the biggest down-the-road hole in the team.

It’s not great either
It’s “cute” Sean Payton making amends that he let Jenkins go years ago.
I do like Jenkins, this just feels like an emotional decision.
The Ingram stuff last year, not so much. That was just business.

I think it was a deal to bring leadership and experience to perhaps the youngest secondary in the league. And to pull him and his family out of Philly I do believe they would of had to over pay a bit.
I think emotion is for rookie coaches.

I agree... We need leadership in that group. We need someone to help mentor Lattimore, cgj, and Marcus Williams. Lattimore is really good at times but has shown games where he is just plain bad.
We also need someone to be the veteran of the secondary to point out things in big moments that other don’t see. Maybe he can help prevent that 3rd and long conversion with less than a minute left.
It is also worth noting that good safeties can play a long time in this league. Even if they lose a step athletically they can make up from it with their smarts. It is why some corners transition from corner to safety as they age.

Also it is worth mentioning that their was reports that the saints offered bell 7.5 million a year and he turned it down so they had to move forward and fill that hole. Good for the saints for sticking to their number. Bell is a box safety. He was simply just not worth more than that.

well we signed Jenkins so we won't
Wrong. Jenkins had a team option that was declined so it’s treated as if the team cut him. Any player signed that was cut off another team doesn’t count. Bell would give us a 6th comp pick with his contract. So basically we got Jenkins and a 6th rounder out of letting him go.
We are currently scheduled to get a 3rd and two 6th rounders next year if we don’t sign any more free agents. We missed out on possibly a 3rd or more likely 4th by resigning Peat....

Good point. Charles Woodson and Rid Woodson played into their late 30’s at a high level. Think Payton was tired of the defensive breakdowns at the end of games costing us wins and figured Jenkins would help put an end to it. Jenkins started here as a corner so I’m sure he can man SS for a few years at a high level as he ages....

If anyone is questioning this move just go watch the eagles season on Amazon prime.
Some of this money is for Malcolm Jenkins to hold the players accountable
Leadership isn't cheap
It's really only a 2 yr 16 mil contract.
If the saints wanted vonn bell back that badly, you don't think they could've matched the Bengals offer. 11mil guaranteed

Best of luck to Vonn. Always enjoyed him.
Moving on, we just got a major upgrade in pass defense and took a small hit in run defense. Once the saints saw CJGJ could cover the slot better than VB and run and tackle just as well, this was inevitable. Think this is a net positive for us. Vonn was a liability in pass coverage that made some big plays, especially with turnovers. It's a balancing test but we come out on top.
Would love to get another pass rusher, either FA or draft, and add a sideline to sideline LB as well.

I see Vonn doing in Cincy what M Jenkins did in Philly and that is coming into his own and becoming a really good player, he was already headed in that direction. I wish they (Saints) could have kept him, I would have liked to see him playing next to Jenkins in the near future because I think Marcus Williams is a bust.
