major fail on the Saints part if thats all it takes for Bell
Look at it this way, Bell told the Saints his asking price. The Saints said no at that price. If the Saints were to wait for him to lower his price they would have missed out on getting Jenkins. And if they waited for his asking price to drop there was always a possibility another team could have bit and gave him what he wanted. Then the Saints are without any quality back end help. So they didn't take the risk and decided to pay a multiple pro bowl safety for 2 years. It was an easy decision IMO, especially with how good Malcolm is in the lockerroom

Grant Delpit, come on down

only relevance Delpit has in our situation is that Delpit would give Marcus Williams his walking papers. I think coaching staff really likes Marcus though if i had to guess.

Not necessarily. Saint could have offered the same contract and he declined, convinced he could get more. Just like Ingram.

Yeah it happens all the time.
We likely offered Peat a contract which he turned down, tested FA, realized he wasn't getting more, and came back.
We had a backup option on the roster if he didn't resign. We didn't have a backup option for Bell so when he turned us down we offered the money to someone else.
And you can't compare and say fail because first it's 2 different players and we may not have been the only team bidding for Jenkins, and second Bell was likely thinking he was worth more than he eventually settled for (which is why it's also a shorter deal so he can try to cash in again for hopefully more in his mind). He may have been asking for $9 mil per from us, and we reportedly offered $7.5 mil per.
If it was as simple as going to $8 mil per we likely would have done it.

Yea sounds like his agent lost him money. Like u said supposedly we offered him 7-7.5 year average and they turned it down and Payton loved Jenkins so we jumped. That’s on Bell and his agent and it cost him. Saints did the right thing. There’s a reason he’s been sitting on the sidelines this long and had to tak an offer with a bad organization. Terrible decision by him and his agent.

It’s not just about bell over Jenkins
You have to ask yourself why they paid Jenkins as much as they did when that clearly isn’t market price.
He’s 7 years older & not as good, but getting paid way more
Why did they have to have that guy at that price, you must ask yourself

I don’t think I’m as high on him as many on here are. He’s a solid starter and has made some plays but he’s not really an enforcer in the box and it doesn’t seem like he’s asked to cover difficult assignments most of the time. I feel like he’s probably good in zone which is valuable and he’s young so I would have liked to have kept him but I don’t think his production is make or break considering who we have.

Safeties that can cover good are generally paid more. Run stopping Safeties are usually a lot cheaper. Bell is a liability in the passing game compared to Malcolm Jenkins.
I think we got much better against the pass. All Malcolm Jenkins has to do is hold his own against the run. Personally, I think we got better as a defense with Jenkins over Bell. jmo.
Also, CGJ can do everything that Bell can do & we still have him on a rookie contract for 3 more years.
The only thing that I don't like about losing Bell is that he is still very young & has a lot of football left to play. We're locked in with Malcolm Jenkins for at least 2 years. Loomis gave us an out in that 3rd year if necessary. Hopefully, Malcolm Jenkins ages well & gives us good value with his contract.

I'd say they are about equal. Malcolm being better in coverage, Bell better in run support. Not a good look with Bell being signed on a bargain deal, relative to what Jenkins is getting, though.

i agree
Jenkins > Bell anyway

Jenkins is a much better safety than Bell even at his current age. Bell is a box safety and is a dime a dozen. The demand for box safeties are much less than cover safeties

Jenkins is much better than Bell. What crack are you smoking?

We lost Ingram the same way... lowballing our talent away

We lost Ingram because we couldn’t get in touch with his agent. We would have easily paid the price he ended up signing for
