Our tax revenue per capita isn't at the bottom. It's actually higher than a lot more functional states. This is from 2016 and JBE has raised taxes since.

States are not poor, people are poor, regardless where they live. No one becomes poor stepping over an imaginary line. Some regions can have an economical downturn where people who were not poor become poor, but when the economy rebounds the same people who were poor before the crash usually remain the poor. Poverty is a state of mind that can almost completely be cured by 3 things - graduate high school, get a full time job, don't have children before you are married.

Teachers for sure would get their raises then.

No doubt. But the discrepancy between what the rest of the country is doing with tax breaks is dramatic.

To help fix your shitty public education system and allow normal folks to eliminate the need for the privatization of education? Yes. Yes I do. And that's just one example.
Your state is shite from the ground up. Stop whining and do something.

Louisiana spends middle of the pack per pupil on education. All the funding in the world isn't going to fix the fatherless homes a lot of those kids come from. This is the crux of the problem.

Maybe you're not familiar with the corruption and misplaced funds.
I'm not whining, I'm just smart enough to realize raising taxes on corporations to give to our inept government is a bad idea. Throwing more money to public schools will not solve the issues we have.

We spend more per student than most states. The problem with our education is not financial.

You guys love to play the poor me card. It's tiresome. If you think surrounding southern states don't have the same issues you do you're just a simpleton. Suck it up, Buttercup.

Sure they do. Alabama ranks lower in education than LA does. LA spends more per pupil on education than Texas. But if we only had more funding

They are talking about reducing tax breaks granted to companies that have applied for it... not raising taxes on all corporations.
Isn't it kind of significant that we could cut those tax breaks in HALF and still be the highest in the country? Exxon isn't going anywhere if it is still cheaper to stay in Louisiana.

A government that want to keep the poor at the poverty level, make empty promises, collect taxes, and stay rich. Democrats at its finest.

The big takeaway for me though was the per capita corporate subsidies comparison to other states.
Here is what they are missing. Most states have a low tax rate and wide base and few "subsidies". LA is different.
Let's say a companies makes $50,000.
One state will tax that at 4 percent, so the tax is $2,000.
LA will tax them at 6 percent, so the tax is $3,000, but then we give them a tax credit of $1,000. Total tax is $2,000.
Yet, these idiot Dems, who don't know how finances actually work, will yell and piss and moan about how many tax subsidies we give businesses.
I think our LA business tax system is horribly screwed up and is so confusing, that it causes a lot of businesses to stay away.
Think of it another way. If we were giving away that much in subsidies to businesses, and it was really helping the business, we would have 300 Fortune 500 companies located in the state.

Guys, this is just fricking stupid.
This a essentially a State Board of politically connected dudes (probably Democrats) getting kickbacks from cutting deals to not tax huge global industrial companies under the guise that these companies will move to another State. I got news for you, all of the ones that don't need the Mississippi River have already moved because Louisiana sucks. Someone mentions "tax" around here and y'all immediately default to defensive "no more taxes" mode.

I’d like to bump this thread. The video is getting more traction now, glad you posted it.

Neither of the two posers in this video, or their cherry picked data have convinced me that by making plants pay more will guarantee a better life for the residents of area code 70805.
It costs nothing to find a better way of life. It does take not thinking of yourself as a victim because of where you are born.
The idea that "communities" and "governments" are losing money because some entity isn't paying what THEY believe should be paying is a bit pompous. So if Exxon shutdown the BR refinery, would that mean that the EBR schools would be better off?
