Man, I liked Rambo
Most people who saw it did. It wasn't supposed to be a master work of artistic film making, it was an old fashioned action movie, nothing remarkable but nothing particularly awful.
The typical media critics particularly loathed it because of political and social reasons. We've entered a horrible era where a huge portion of movie criticism is judging the movies by its perceived politics, even if the movies themselves aren't even trying to be political.

Well... action movies getting panned by critics but loved by movie goers is not unique to this era. In the 80s a lot of action movies were considered terrible by critics but people loved them.
The Running Man? Poor reviews, but I loved it.
Total Recall? Mediocre reviews.
Terminator 2? Good reviews, but well below The Terminator (original movie)
Conan the Barbarian? Poor reviews.
Every Rambo movie outside of the first is below 50 on Metacritic. Hell, Rambo III came out in the 80s and was utterly blasted by critics.

The Fanatic should win. There are folks who actually liked Cats. Nobody can sit through the fanatic.
It deserves every award. It probably won't win because NOBODY watched it. Watch Stuckman's review on youtube of The Fanatic.
Just watched the review and agree that this movie is 100% must see. This is going to end up getting a Room like cult following.

:-/
I'd like to see the reviews that came out at the time both were made but I doubt either of us care enough to compile that info. I'd really be shocked if T1 had better initial reviews than T2.

Yeah, I just went with Metacritic. No idea, but on the flip side I doubt there's been enough reviews of older movies to change the score that much.

I think Stallone gets on here every year as a sort of legacy nomination.

Rambo: Last Blood
That was a solid action flick. Liked it better than Rambo (2008).
I'd watch First Blood and Last Blood over the other Rambos; sort of tired of Vietnam Rambo.
Despite the critics, the non-war domestic Rambos will hold up better in time.

The Godfather received more rave reviews than The Godfather Part II at the time of release, and many people believe the sequel to be the superior film. Star Wars received more rave reviews than The Empire Strikes Back, and how many fans hold ESB in higher esteem than the 1977 original?
It wouldn't surprise me at all if The Terminator got more favorable reviews than its sequel. Truth be told, I hold them in about the same regard. Both are two truly fantastic movies that are essentially from two different genres. The Terminator is pretty much a sci-fi slasher/horror flick while Terminator 2 is a straight up action/adventure movie.

Because critics hold sequels to an impossible standard if the original is great.
It's like a built-in find fault beacon in their brains, otherwise you're diminishing the original.
Nobody listened to any critics when T2 came out, nobody cared...people just lined up in droves and saw it over and over again saying, holy shite, this is the greatest action flick of all-time...it might be even better than Aliens (which was the GOAT action flick until T2).

Terminator 2 was still favorably received by critics upon its initial release in 1991. It was also nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winning 4, so it's not like no one outside movie goers liked the film.

That’s not a surprise. On my first time viewing of The Godfather, I thought it was the greatest film I ever watched while I was let down by Godfather II. Thought the film was a tad slow and boring at times and really only liked the parts with De Niro as Vito Corleone. It was only after repeat viewings that I realized what a superlative film Godfather II was and now I consider it to be a superior film to I. And considering the fact that film critics only watch a film once before their review, it’s very understandable why Godfather I was so much highly regarded than Godfather II.

Good, that guy is so overrated
He was OK in Stranger Things because everything about that show was over the top. But the only time I ever really found him credible was as the psycho child abductor in Walk Amongst the Tombstones. I think he was playing himself that time.
