Depression and Suicide Rates Are Rising Sharply in Young Americans due to Social Media

Older article but it is interesting so I figured I would share

Social media has created a whole generation of narcissists who simply do not know how to function socially.

Between 2009 and 2017, rates of depression among kids ages 14 to 17 increased by more than 60%, the study found. The increases were nearly as steep among those ages 12 to 13 (47%) and 18 to 21 (46%), and rates roughly doubled among those ages 20 to 21. In 2017—the latest year for which federal data are available—more than one in eight Americans ages 12 to 25 experienced a major depressive episode, the study found.
The same trends held when the researchers analyzed the data on suicides, attempted suicides and “serious psychological distress”—a term applied to people who score high on a test that measures feelings of sadness, nervousness and hopelessness. Among young people, rates of suicidal thoughts, plans and attempts all increased significantly, and in some cases more than doubled, between 2008 and 2017, the study found.
quote:
What’s causing today’s young people so much anguish? “This is always a tough question to answer, as we can’t prove for sure what the causes are,” Twenge says. “But there was one change that impacted the lives of young people more than older people, and that was the growth of smartphones and digital media like social media, texting and gaming.”
While older adults also use these technologies, “their adoption among younger people was faster and more complete, and the impact on their social lives much larger,” Twenge says.
While not all the evidence is consistent, a substantial amount of research has found associations between heavy technology use and poor mental health outcomes among adolescents and young adults. Research aside, many parents, teachers, guidance counselors and others who work with young people say social media and heavy technology use are a problem.
The way young people communicate and spend their leisure time “has fundamentally changed,” Twenge adds. “They spend less time with their friends in person and less time sleeping, and more time on digital media.”

Parents should monitor and limit the time spent on electronic media and force if necessary their children to read and play outside more.

I am sure that's a large part of it as nobody posts their real life on social media and also plenty of people faking their good life. I am sure bullying comes into play and a host of other things that someone at such an impressionable age can't process fully.

Our teens didn’t have any social media accounts until 15/16. And we probably would have held off a little longer if it weren’t for both of their circles of friends moving nearly all of their communication to Snapchat.
You gotta keep your kids away from it for as long as practical, but unfortunately there may come a point where the cons begins to outweigh the pros. Just gotta put limits on it and monitor the crap out of any changes in behavior and mood.

Probably time to reconsider the age limit of 13 on these sites.
Thank God Facebook wasn't a thing until I was basically out of high school. Myspace was harmless, and ironically people were more authentic on it. Probably because it was smaller.

No question. And it's not just limited to children, but social media is a fun house mirror in the sense that it distorts reality. When you scroll through your Facebook, Instagram, etc all you see is picture/stories of "friends" (mostly just acquaintances) seemingly having the time of their lives. We, of course, don't see any of the struggles they are having just like we all do. Kids don't have a great sense of perspective. So they think "everyone else is having a great life except me." And that is COMPLETELY untrue. Those people just aren't publishing their tough moments, insecurities, etc.
It's easier said than done, but we HAVE to try to teach children perspective. We all have ups and downs. Even those whose social media persona makes it appear as if there are no issues in their lives whatsoever.

Had this conversation a few years ago with some friends, who have kids.
Like they said, when we were kids.. If you got "bullied", once the day was over, you went home, you forget about it until the next day and at some point it stops.. You start to frick with them back, etc..
Today, it doesn't leave them. School is over they hop on social media, its spills over from school.. Other people chime in, etc.. That's tough.

People are more easily exposed on social media. Folks used to be able to die with skeletons in the closet

I saw a post yesterday from an apparently well-known youth basketball coach and he said to stop telling kids everyone is a winner and to let them sit on the bench and take a loss from time to time because that is reality. It's great advice.

Tik tok is the king of bullying. “14 year old slept with my boyfriend, let me create this tik tok to expose her for the slut she is”. *proceeds to get thousands of views

New and improved version of Vine basically from the videos I've seen from it.

The social science about narcissism and self- absorption (over empathy and connection to others) of the current generation over previous generations is alarming. Since human beings are governed by our nature and “ there is nothing new under the sun “ - it has to be social media. When 16 year old are talking about “ taking a self-care day” and rejecting stoicism as a matter of principle, we are truly seeing something a bit different. Journey too far into self is a recipe for unhappiness. It is in fact NOT actually all about you.

The boomers are the narcissists picking on kids just trying to play some COD. Really is saddening.
