Many of you fail to realize that the NFL is a business

I wouldn't expect any player to take a discount for the betterment of the team. The first thing they tell you when you enter the NFL is "this is a business". The organization isn't a charitable business, it's a profitable business. If my employer is making money off me, then I expect to make as much money as I can off of them. Who Dat!!!

I would agree with you except that Drew obviously wants to win another Super Bowl before he retires.
If that's truly his main goal, then he should be aware that ruining that cap so that the team can't bring in immediate impact players is going to negatively affect that goal.
If all he wants is the money, then go for it. But don't pretend you're just here for one more super bowl and then bankrupt the team.

Many of you guys fail to realize that being an NFL football player is not like having a desk job at State farm. The spending power of 15 million dollars vs 20 million dollars is nothing relative to what you and I, and the everyday average Joe could I expect to see in our salary.
these guys make the kind of money that can afford them the luxury of choosing to be able to pay others on the team and stay competitive (you know, like a second wide receiver option), or they can take every cent and run with it.
really just up to them and where their priorities are. and it's not that far-fetched to think that somebody who's worth a hundred million dollars would be willing to sacrifice a little bit of change in order to have another super bowl stamped to their Wikipedia page

I think at some point, certain high profile players become more than just players to an organization based on length of service and success; they become synonymous with the organization and then traditional business models dont really apply any more.
Both the Saints and Drew would be cutting off their nose to spit their faces by separating over money. There are more than a few creative ways to accomplish both of their goals.
Now if they feel as though they can do better from a talent standpoint by someone else, and the player disagrees, then it gets messy.
egos and shite

If Brees signs a deal for $28mil a year, I want to make sure you guys understand that he did sacrifice a little bit of change.
Because everything I see out there is guys wanting him to take a $20mil deal, and that's not a "little bit of change" of a discount to what his fair market value is.

This gets thrown around a lot when player contracts come up but look how often we see coaches and owners base huge decisions on emotions or going with their gut feeling.

yes but employees and employers will often look at the bigger picture and be willing to make a little less if it helps them to reach its desired goals

Normally I’d agree with you shel
But let’s not act like $20M is chump change. If Brees REALLY wants one more shot then he’ll take one for the team. Brees, realistically, is worth $33-34M but we can’t pay him that and he knows that so he’s taken less before. I think $25M is a good compromise. He knows, the team knows, CSP knows and the entire organization knows he’s not going to single handedly lead us to a SB. He needs help, sometimes a lot of help and if he wants the team to be able to compete like it did in 2019 and 2018 then he’s going to HAVE to make a huge sacrifice money wise. It’s not fair but winning a SB ain’t easy and this team not only needs to keep some of the depth it has but also has to try to find a way to get better
We’ve gotten really lucky with our last few drafts. We’ve found some studs but at some point that luck might run out. It’s easy to see we’ll keep restocking the roster because we’ve drafted so we’ll but what if we have a dud this year? A talented roster already in place makes it easier to withstand that and if we do hit on our draft class again this year then it takes us over the top. If we lose our depth and hit on our draft class, then it’s just more of the same. Brees needs to take the large discount to keep our depth intact

Drew needs that #2 receiver or we aren’t doing shite again.

Yes, it's a business. And the smartest business decision this franchise could make is move on instead wasting another year and the ability to sign other younger talent in another vein attempt to get Brees his second ring.

Unpopular opinion: if that were me, frick the Super Bowl, a $5 - 10 MM difference is huge. It’s easy to say he should take a pay cut for a Super Bowl as a random fan, but when that dollar difference is on the line you’d have to be insane to pass on it.

It is also a bottom line game. If Brees asks for enough where the team cannot land a decent #2 and some OL help and he has a mediocre year his value as a spokesman is affected. So there is a balance to be had. Anthony Davis took far less money to play for the Lakers because he calculated his outside income would increase.

No that was THE NFL (league office) acting as an umbrella organization for all of its franchises. The league (office) now exists as a trade association made up of and financed by its 32 member teams. 31 of these teams are owned individually and are profit-making businesses; only the Green Bay Packers retains its non-profit status.
