If there’s only three RBs on the roster, I don’t see anyone leaving. You’ll get touches with only three and the incumbent starter gone.

Why sign somebody that you know will likely never play.

Because you absolutely need the depth. You cannot go into a season with 3 scholarship backs.
I think more people on here are more obsessed with a number than actual depth. Getting someone who has little chance to positively contribute his first year is not really depth. Look to the roster. Tory Carter. Ask him to lose a little weight to improve his speed. Knows the offense could be your #4. Try out Devonta Lee. Has the size and speed, knows the receiving offense and could be readier quicker. What about the walkons? How do they look? Could one be your emergency backup?
If you don't like the answers and you're concerned about depth, then you should be looking at JC and grad transfers to get someone who could contribute quicker. The problems is, ironically, that they would probably be turned off by our depth.
Not against a running back, but he should be someone who could make a quality contribution right away. Not being an EE will make that difficult for many recruits at our level of competition, so we shouldn't be afraid of looking internally.

That Curry will be back to No 3 rb next year.
Clyde was not supposed to play before our new stars.
IMHO. might consider using those letters.

I don’t use imho when it’s something I’d bet on

we dont need to waste a scolly on a RB who will likely never be a starter. If it is just for depth, how much depth does a very average true freshman give you anyway? We have guys already on the team (Carter and Kirkland) that would give better quality depth for the 2020 season and can shoot for a couple RB's in the next class that are difference makers

Unfortunately for you, that’s all it is, your opinion. If you want to follow your hunch, go lay a bet and we can meet in a thread next year to see how good your opinions are.

RB is the one it is easiest to get a freshman serviceable for in a pinch.
I think this is true of most offenses, but not ours. If the RB is either running the ball or executing play-action 90% of the time it's easy to pick up the offense. That's not the case with our offense. The RB is having to make pre-snap reads. That's why our best RB is fourth on the depth chart.

This isnt NCAA 14 where guys don't get hurt and you can get by with limited numbers. We saw this year that "freshmen can come in and play" isn't always true. Sure they can take a few carries but in this offense if they can't catch or pass protect they aren't ready. TDP and Emery are more talented than any back we will bringing this class, aside from Evans, and they weren't and still aren't ready for a major load.
Moving guys from another position puts in a position like Texas was in most of the year. That's not good roster management. It also hurts depth at the position you take the player from.
Great post! Perhaps boxcar should actually think before he posts.

No one is advocating "wasting" a scholarship. What we are advocating is bringing in a really good back. Remember Brossette and Williams, and how "they" would never be starters? Just how important were they in their senior years? And Williams in the NFL now.
This takes a lot of vision and experience to understand and as others have said its about continuing the line of development and roster management. The what if's in a year or two or three, and injury management.
Ex. Price goes down for the year, and then Emory gets banged up in a game and is out a game or two (which happens a lot to players). We have one guy at that point.

Do you think curry leads the team in carries next year?
Posted on 1/6/20 at 11:18 am to Dudebro2
I think if we only have 3 RBs we could potentially use some WRs as as pseudoRB if needed.
Posted on 1/6/20 at 11:19 am to Lester Earl
I think it's Davis-Price for the most snaps based on how he seemed to pick up the offense, in particular pass pro. As far as carries, I've no clue, could be week to week based on practice

Brossette and Williams werent just space fillers. Brossette was one of the most prolific RB's in La. high school history and Williams was a big bruising physical speciman of a high school RB who is now in the NFL. All Im saying is that if all we can sign is a lesser quality back than usual LSU quality at the position, then save the spot for next year. We have other better options already on the team for this year

I think the staff is on top of this and probably have it covered already so not worried at all

Exactly. They just want any back for depth purposes which is idiotic. I'd rather a guy already on the team that has experience and can pick up the pass blocking and reads quicker (see how Curry started out of nowhere). I'd rather look to another position to grab a guy that isn't really being used. Devonte Lee or Tory Carter would be my pick. Honestly they'd only be used for relief at that point anyway. You plan for stuff to happen, not complete catastrophe. That's why the average school only roles with 3 deep at most positions.
In LSU's worst injury year for RBs we lost Murphy preseason, Scott against Bama, and then Keiland against La Tech I think. That's when we were down to Ridley and swiss army knife Holliday. Nothing like that has ever come close to happening again.

It’s not just about that lol. It’s about ideal roster construction not just for this year but for the next few
Just like any other recruit. They don’t sign every kid to play right away

Probably not, but he’s not transferring. He redshirted last year, got very few carries this year, I can’t see him willingly sitting out his 3rd year while he transfers. Especially with our lack of depth and his playing time against OU. If he ever leaves, it will likely be as a grad transfer where he won’t have to sit.

We’re going to sign another RB. I think it’s important to do so this year. It MAY not hurt us next year but I’d like not to take that chance.
I agree with you, but at this point with the success that LSU has had under O and considering the year we had we don't need to settle for "a RB" if there isn't a truly elite back that we can sign. Instead use that scholly for another prime time playa and wait until next year their are some serious quality RB's in the 2021 class priority should be to sign 2 or 3 next year.
Emery & TDP are here until 2021 unless they transfer so just load up next year if we can't get the elite back this year.
