Louisiana is such a diverse state, not only with a rut varying from September to February, but the deer population is just as extreme.
Some areas see a few deer per sitting.
It's hard to have a one size fits all approach.
quote:I try like hell to cook it as much as I can, but we only get through 1-2 per year.
We eat a lot of deer at our house and we've never gone through more than about 4 in a year.
So, it's a cycle, 2 this year, 1 next, and so on.
Maybe some larger families can go through more... or you can give some away to friends/family.
quote:I generally like this approach.
Let the state manage the population, let landowners manage for age.

increase the quality of the deer. Or that "you don't need 6 deer, so why should we be able to shoot 6?" [/quote]
That’s a pretty 80’s way to think.
Shoot a shite load of does.
Shoot old bucks.
Get your ratio right.
????????????
Profit

I simply do not understand this. How many times a week are you eating it? Do you make any into sausage, brats, etc?

I like to see a state wide 3 deer (1 buck, 1 doe, 1 either sex) limit for 2 years. The First buck must be 4 on one side and 13" wide. If your either sex tag is filled with a buck it must be trophy class. Those restrictions are 10pt on and 16" wide. After 2 years go to a final 4 deer state wide 2 buck 2 doe with antler restrictions of 4 on one side and 13" wide forever.

2 antlered / 2 antlerless / 1 either
4 points on one side requirement for the antlered.

Leave the numbers alone and just put a point restriction on bucks.
2 bucks...3 does..1 either sex
Bucks must be 3 point on one side

Bucks must be 3 point on one side

I’d prefer 1 buck / 1 doe.
You are talking about daily, right?

So a 5.5 year old 9 point would be off limits for your 2nd buck?

There are problems with any antler restrictions.Point and width restrictions lead to high-grading.An outstanding yearling or 2 1/2 year old with 8 points and 13 in. spread is legal while a 5 1/2 year old 4 pt with 12 in. spread is left to breed.I killed a 2 1/2 year old buck with 9 points and 16 in.spread few years ago,no doubt he would been outstanding deer with another 2-3 years.
The best way is to age a buck by his body structure but where I hunt bucks don’t stand around in open, turning this way and that so I can figure out how old he is like they do on hunting shows. In Louisiana it’s usually thick with shooting lanes and high lines,I typically have about 10 seconds to get my crosshairs on a buck and shoot before they get across.
With the drop in sale of hunting licenses,I don’t know that making it harder to kill a buck is the best way to go.It’s hard to get kids interested in hunting these days with video games distracting them.If a kid is interested, are they going to stay interested if they see a buck and can’t shoot because it doesn’t have enough points or wide enough.
Another issue, the states with the most restrictions and high populations also have the highest number of automobiles hitting deer. That doesn’t seem the best use of the resource, not to mention the people injured and killed.

No APR, One buck archery, one buck firearm (can take your second buck with archery equipment during open firearm season) 2 doe with archery, 2 doe with firearm. Move gun season out of the rut.

That would be the most effective way to increase the age structure of bucks.

If you do that, we will have to allow night-time hunting to kill one.

I don’t think there should be any differences in number of deer taken in each Area. What needs to be done is restrict number of deer residents from each Area can shoot For instance, hunters with addresses in area code 985, 504, 337, or 225 should only be able to kill 2 deer per year no matter which area they hunt. Hunters with 318 area code remain at 6 deer per year
No reason 318 hunters should suffer because our southern brethren have shot out all their deer

Stay down there then. The annual convoy is coming next weekend. I-49 will be littered with corn sacks and natural light boxes

I don’t like a point restriction. In south MS it’s 10” inside or 13” main beam with youth being able to shoot any antlered deer. This seems very fair to me. I would like to see the creel limit reduces as we can currently shoot 3 bucks two does per license with NO tags.... he’ll even if they left it alone and put a tag/check in system in place it would be an improvement. I just don’t feel the population is there in our area to allow 5 deer per hunter. I also suspect that the MS honor system gets heavily abused
