Had acl surgery before. My main recommendations before reading this thread:
- do your PT and push yourself to do even more. It will only help
- buy a cryo cuff system that goes around your knee. Best $100 I’ve ever spent
- chomp on those pain pills but be careful about constipation. That was worse than the actual knee pain

The first few days once the pain meds wear off suck.
Good luck!

3 ACL reconstructions with some extras.
Stool softener, ice, and compression are your best friends.
Biggest thing they don't prep you for is the fact that you'll be backed up on opiates trying to drop a steamer with one leg locked out in a brace. Hence the stool softener.
As far as the leg, put weight on it and mobilise it as soon as possible. In the long term you might have scar tissue build ups and tears which hurt like a mother, but not anything serious.
Best of luck. The rehab sucks, but it'll suck way worse for way longer if you don't follow through on it.

My son blew out his right ACL in 5th Grade and his left one in 7th grade. You'll be alright.

Reading this as my husband recoups from his ACL/MCL repair yesterday -- he's taken pain meds BUT he's not really hurting. Ortho did a nerve block BUT he also uses something call an On-Q -- a catheter/iv type thing is inserted into the upper thigh. The ball at the other end holds 400 cc "pain numbing medication" in it (Lidocaine? IDK) that he can control how much goes in per hour by a dial. He's 24+ hours post op and told the nurse who called today that his pain is a 1-2. At the does they start at (6 ml/hr) it would last nearly 3 days to get him over the hump.
His doc was the only one at this particular surgery center that they know of that uses it -- I'm sure it'll cost an arm and a leg but to see him NOT in terrible pain is worth it. #damnskitrip
Anyone needing this type of surgery, consider asking your doc about it. And YES learn the difference between pain and discomfort. He kept saying his knee hurt to the recovery nurse but what he finally realized he meant was his calf was tight. By that time, he'd already gotten 2 round of morphine, 2 rounds of fentanyl and at least 1 if not 2 of demerol. Yeah he puked but that was a LOT of medication.

You're my new hero and you can't just drop that grenade and not explain how the hell that happened.

After reconstruction the pain did not reach its height until day 6 or 7 post op. Day 3 was when it started to feel uncomfortable bc the meds were wearing off. For me day 2 was about a 2 and day 6 was a 9.
Wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone. It sucked. I also chose my hamstring and not a cadaver graft. Best of luck to your husband. Everyone’s recovery is different and I hope it goes better for him.

Been there. Not fun.
REHAB.
REHAB.

also get Pain Free by Pete Egoscue and get your shite straight after you're mostly done with rehab. If you dont, you'll pay later.

Give him a year of rehab. He might lose a step, but a 4.3 40 instead of a 4.2 still isn’t anything to sneeze at.

Get a porch swing and swing every day to keep that thing loose.

Had my ACL done in 94 and used connective tissue from my knee to form the new tendon instead of using a cadaver one for fear of possible rejection.
I will say, when I woke up in the hospital and had to stay overnight, it hurt like hell. It was only a few days before they had me in PT and the best advice I can give you is to do what they say, do it like they tell you to, and don't try to do more on your own unless they give you something to do at home.
There's a good chance your leg muscles will atrophy a bit from being kept immobile and braced up for a while, so it will take time for those muscles to rebuild. A lot of that depends on prior physical condition and age. I was in good shape at the time of my surgery, but 42 years old and it took Workmen's Comp almost 4 months before they'd OK the surgery, all the while, things were going downhill in the joint.
Good luck and follow the therapist's instructions and not rush things or you could suffer a set-back.

Damn. Sucks, man. Best of luck with the recovery.

You'll be alright. My one had ACL surgery at 10 on his right leg and ACL surgery at 13 on his left knee. Worst part is right after surgery. They get you up and moving right away. Rehab is not bad at all.

Well crap. They said that days 2/3 would be the worst. He starts therapy Thursday (will only be an assessment) so I guess his Friday apt is really when they’ll start.
