Conservatives/Moderates in grad school

So, I made the decision to go back to school for a PhD. I started about a month ago, and everything was very cool during the orientation period- I respect my cohort’s intellect and diversity, and I hope to learn a lot from the smart and thoughtful professors.
As I’m getting more into the program, I’m encountering unnecessary politicization from the more advanced students. One student went so far as to say, “and what about your white privilege?” after I talked about border checkpoints as part of a discussion on civil rights. I had literally never met her before and was appalled by her fallacious reasoning, presumptions, and racism. I’m pretty moderate- there has been systemic discrimination against racial minorities in this country and that does have effects worth studying, however, her statement was logically fallacious, presumptive, and racist. I don’t want to be a squeaky wheel, but I know I can only countenance crap like that so many times before I use logical reasoning to shut her down. Other students make irrelevant political comments out of the blue (like lamenting the US isn’t a direct democracy- not at all relevant to what we’re studying).
So, CSS, I know, but has anyone else been in a situation like this? How’d you deal with it?

If she has big tits, tight abs, and a pretty face you should try to find common ground. If she's ugly tell her to frick off.

I know, but if conservatives would actually admit these things (they are true of uneducated, rural whites as well), people of color wouldn’t flock to the only party that acknowledges their history. Then we could have a conversation about really creating opportunity for all- via things like safe, green spaces and quality schools- not reparations and quotas. Can’t we all admit Baton Rouge would be better off in the long run if we built recreational facilities (included many for children only) throughout North BR and stationed cops there. What if states built safe bike trails around rural Appalachia? Liberals would flock there, and things like pinkberry Starbucks, etc. would follow.

Conservatives deny this?
The studies are in. Graduate high school, work full time, wait until marriage to have kids.
The black community was well on it's way to reaching equity until welfare programs ruined their families and work ethic.

Give them what they want.
They’ll fail you otherwise.
They’ll fail you otherwise.

In law school, anything to the right of Trotsky gets you labeled a white nationalist.
I was once labeled the section “racist” for questioning the precedent used to support Justice Harland’s dissent in the 1870’s Civil Rights cases.
It was my opinion that much of the law was supportable as supporting the Right to Travel under Crandel v. Nevada, but that no precedent at that time supported Congress having the power to forbid segregation in theaters.
It wasn’t an argument of right verses wrong, but of what law existed at the time. Textualism and Formalism verses Natural Law and Equity. Reading the letter of the law is racism because laws are written by racists.

Outright? Not most
By implication? Quite frequently. Like when people roll their eyes at Southern graduates or AA studies majors (no, this is not a job ready degree, but there is some value in having some scholars research this particular history)

How's that worked out so far?
From what I see all it's done is bred more victim complexes.

Truth. The tolerant left are not tolerant at all, and not nice about their intolerance.
I'm in grad school and one of my profs injects his political opinions into lectures that should be about mathematics. I try to not let the expression on my face change, and never respond.

I was the law school conservative, but that was nearly ten years ago (I left my leadership of the Federalist Society off my Grad school application). The atmosphere feels different now- sort of like a litmus test. I dunno, it’s weird. It’s also a much smaller group, so a professor not liking you is a much bigger deal. I actually don’t want to be political, I just don’t care to let indoctrination slip by unnoticed. The struggle is real...

Not trying to be a smart arse, but I am so glad my doctorate was in Clinical Pharmacology. Got my BS in 1980s and PharmD in 2005. We did not have to deal with any BS.

Sadly, I suspect this is my answer.

You mean the party most responsible for their history?

Agreed, but I don’t think it has to- if the leftist indoctrination didn’t predominate, we could have more cool, meaningful research.

Scoff all you want but poll numbers don't lie.
The power of free stuff. It's no coincidence that Bernie is super popular amongst college students.

That is arguably true, but playing “the other guy is worse” isn’t really a winning strategy- that’s why it’s not working out.

I'm not following your reply. I was referring to people of color identifying with the party that most persecuted them.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It can be lonely gritting your teeth through that shite...

For sure, those conversations use to be had more frequently. Things have changed so much over the last 5-7 years.
