How good of a field is CM actually? Does it pay well? Thanks

Pay is good, hours can suck. Don't spend your life behind a desk for the most part.

Better than Petroleum right now. You are looking at the 70s for starting pay and an opportunity to move up and up. There will always be things required to be built. Also LSU is one of the best in the world for CM.
Architects don’t get jobs, and civil gets decent. CM is the way to go if you have good people and management skills.

Pays as well as you are willing to travel and not have a work life balance. You can do office gigs, where I'm at currently, that pays well enough and a better work life balance. You won't get the money the travelers do but you will also have more of a life. I met many after doing the field life for 5-10 years had enough and moved to the office.

Good degree. However, I will respectfully disagree with part of this statement. Get out from behind the desk. Get in the field and learn how things are actually built.
Computer screens =/= the field. Well, not all of the time.

That is an outlier number and only applicable for some field positions. Starting pay, realistically is $55k to $60k.
ETA: National average

Yes, but you need to have a plan.
Learn as much as you can, get out to the job sites, pay your dues, network, learn to estimate, and go Inyo business for yourself.

For GCs it's great. Subcontractors it's pretty good and way less hassle than a GC.
Get a gig being a Safety or QC, then that's easy money.

Most guys I know make really good money. Obviously with deadlines comes major stress but if you can handle your shite and be organized it’s great. Except when you have to be on site for that 4:30am concrete pour

Wanna frick up a Project? Rely on a computer screen and never do a single layout. Problems for days.
