They aren't simple. They are annoying as frick.
Not EVERY meal on a vacation or during travel has to be some super unique restaurant.
People who insist on this are incredibly pretentious and act like you just suggested child rape is morally okay, just because you want to grab one cheap/quick meal at a chain restaurant.
You aren't somehow more classy or less trashy because you eat at the local hole in the wall over a chain.

I don't understand searching out chains while traveling for work, but I certainly understand eating somewhere convenient. Sometimes it's a local place, sometimes it's a chain. Many times it's the hotel restaurant for an OK burger and a few beers before bed.

In Long Island for work
Last night we went to a little Italian restaurant that was very nice, tonight we went to a place on the bay.
Both places had amazing food.

Outback will do if that’s all there is. Never ate at an OG.
Hope you can be comfortable with yourself enough one day to eat there without feeling like a loser. Must suck not be able to just get a meal where it’s convenient or with the group because you're afraid you won’t get enough upvotes or likes from your “friends”.

They aren't. These are faux status signaling threads. No normal guy worries enough about having a meal at a chain once in a while to make threads about how t

Good Lord, I'm out of town on a business trip and the people I'm with all want to eat at places like Buffalo wild wings and Applebee's.
Meanwhile, there are some nice local restaurants to try. I'm having to convince them to go to nice local restaurants instead of shite that I don't want to eat even when I'm home.
I can't stand that shite. Last time, we were at a conference in Orlando. I was pushing for something local. Their compromise was to go to a limited chain... of Chicago deep dish pizza places. In Orlando.
We could have gone with a great steakhouse or Albert and Victoria's at the Grand Floridian, but noooooo. Shitty deep dish.
I have since started just skipping the group dinners and striking out on my own. I work with those frickers every day. I don't have to eat shitty dinners with them, too.

Eating dinner with the whole group of people you work with after spending all day with them sounds like hell on earth.

It depends where you are and how extreme the crowd is.
It would suck to have someone constantly insist on a local joint, and it would suck to constantly go to a chain.
I’m more like you though. I want to try what the locals like. I can eat at a chain restaurant anytime.

Exactly.
First thing I do on a trip is research the local cuisine and breweries.

I think it depends on the city. If you are going someplace like New Orleans, New York, or anywhere else known for their food you definitely don’t want to go with a chain restaurant.
If you are in some indistinct run-of-the-mill town nothing wrong with eating at a chain restaurant you know you like.

Anyone who wants to eat at Applebees should be killed off. Their food is so fricking bad. I'll eat at chains, but at least make them good ones. Plenty of good chains.
PF Changs
Cheesecake Factory
Longhorn
Olive Garden isnt terrible
Carrabba's
Texas Roadhouse
Etc
The basic chains suck though. Chilis, Applebees, etc
Much better to spend the same or less at local resturants with actual chefs in the back(usually the owner). You get unique dishes with unique spices and taste which is awesome.

Naw, the worst is being on a work trip with a picky eater. This girl would veto every option we threw out. Finally we just let her pick the first week. Then we caught on that she ordered cheese fries every night. Disgusting. Week 2-3 we told her she could go get her cheese fries but we were going local and not going to some chain every night. I think she actually went with us one night and got something different and actually enjoyed it. Running joke where I worked was that the first two questions we always asked our client was where are your restrooms and where are good places to eat.
Some of the smallest towns are where I’ve had the best meals. Their idea of a chain was when they got a McDonalds, Pizza Hut, SubWay etc. The bbq and soul food in these towns was legit though.

Frozen wings, nasty beer from moldy tap lines, and roaches everywhere. What could be better?
And you think all the other places DON'T have any of those challenges.

Went to Chicago for work with another guy. He ordered room service pizza and quesadillas.
I walked a few blocks to the train station, rode the green line 25 minutes, then took a $10 Lyft to Johnnie’s Beef. Because dammit I wanted to try Johnnie’s Italian beef sandwich, even though Mr. Beef was 2 blocks from my hotel.
I ordered an Italian beef, juicy (dunked in the jus), with hot and sweet peppers, fries, Italian ice, and a Diet Coke. Cash only, and run soup nazi style. Total food bill was less than $12, and I ate it at a table in the side lot that I shared with a nice dump truck driver who looked like an NFL linebacker..
Best damned meal I had in Chicago. I will never forget it.
Not sure which one of us is crazier.

I hate going with guys when I travel with coworkers who want to go cheap on dinner because they'll blow through their daily per diem.
Was in Huntsville this week at the Space and Missile Symposium. I took one guy out who wanted to go to Urban Spoon. I spent $60 for 4 people.
The next night I hosted 5 people at Purveyor and spent $680. A new engineer traveling with me ordered the cheapest thing on the menu and water because he thought everyone was paying their own way and he was trying to stay under his per diem. When I paid the whole bill he could have kicked himself.

Absolutely, going online to whine about others dining choices is far worse.

Most chain restaurants have better food than the local places hence why they're popular nationwide whereas the local places are just dumps that can't expand outside of their local market.
Honestly, people should quit eating local and take those terrible joints off life support.
