Jesus.

Baton = what the police beat someone with as needed.

Batten = to secure

Batten down the hatches = Nautical term for securing all open portals on the deck of a ship in anticipation of severe weather.

Meaning you’d go outside and use a bat to pack the ground around your hashes.

It’s not place, as in a place. The saying originates from town of Place, France.

Place was the site of the only fortified town in the general area. Roving hordes of barbarians were known to attack the people, so when they were on the warpath the people would go shelter within the walls of Place.

Hence, “Shelter in Place.”
