It is sort of perplexing that having that much wealth, one doesn't travel with a medical staff (or have one sent in advance) at all times that you plan to be off the grid.

There’s got to be more to the story. Medical facilities aren’t that bad where they were. Probably a combination of things that led up to the old man saying “frick it, we’re going home, now!”

You could be right about the calling for the chopper thing, but that makes zero sense.

He wasn't really off the grid though. I mean with a helicopter he owns he is all of 2 hours away from miami, 60 minute flights each direction.

Most private pilots aren't on call 24 hours a day, but I wouldn't doubt that whenever Cline was at his Bahamas place his pilot was basically on call or at least he had a helicopter on call. Billionaires are a little different, but most guys with private jets/ pilots will often share them with others if they have maintenance or pilot issues on their own.

ETA: Its pretty normal for private planes to return to their home base after dropping off the owner unless its a long way away. Its easier and cheaper to have the plane/ helicopter and pilot return to its home then to keep all the crap there to secure, refuel, etc. on site on the island. Plus you have to house the pilot/ crew. Etc.
