Will we ever see anything close to Bird & Magic again?

The rivalry is too legendary. The only other ones I can compare to it are Palmer & Nicklaus, Woods & Mickelson, Ali & Frazier, maybe Federer & Nadal.. even those probably don’t live up it to it.

Woods & Mickelson
I doubt the Bird/Magic rivalry ever gets topped in America.
Went at it in college. Went to the 2 greatest NBA organizations. Both won. Different personalities. One black one white. Truly grew to love each other.
Probably can’t be beat.

Hell yeah Lebron and Durant!

Cristiano vs Messi >>>> Bird vs. Magic. Nadal vs. Federer is greater as well considering the fact that they're the top 2 players to ever play their sport. Can't say the same about Bird vs. Magic.

Nike tried to with Kobe vs Lebron, but LBJ losing in the conference finals to Dwight Howard crushed that pipe dream

Not in a modern league where the top three draft picks every year cannot shoot jumpers or free throws.

No because the culture isn't the same. Their rivalry transcended just sports. It polarized large portions of the country.
It was the 1980's and the NBA was coming off it's worst decade ever in the 1970's...where white fans weren't going to the games.
The rivalry pushed all the buttons at that time and place.
Nobody believed that white players could dominate black players.
"I would have to say at that time, most black people were racists...we didn't believe a white player could play as good or better than us." - Cedric Maxwell
"I'm going through Logan Airport and there's this black baggage handler and he says to me, I hope you kill the Celtics tonight and I say, oh where you from? And he says, I'm from Boston. I said, I thought everyone from Boston was a Celtics fan and he says...'now why would I root for them white boys.'" - Magic Johnson
"You have a lot of white fans that don't enjoy going to the games...ya know...the game is too black." - Anonymous fan in Bird and Magic doc in the 1970's.
"Here you have a guy who's white, can't run and can't jump and yet he's the best player in the world." - Anonymous fan in Bird and Magic doc.
"I always felt like the press was biased in favor of Larry Bird, like they were always trying to make him the hero...you know you'd see some guy score and you'd see Larry Bird in a cast and suit on the sideline and they'd say...'Larry Bird made that possible, couple of weeks ago when he told that guy he could do it and he did it.'" - Arsenio Hall
"Magic and Larry saved the NBA. Magic and Larry. Not Michael, Magic and Larry." - Greg Gumbel

Yes, but we won't come close to recognizing it at the time.
The same question was asked of Chamberlain-Russell.
Basketball won't eve be at that low of an ebb point again, but we've spent the last decade watching the confrontation of Top 20 players as though it were nothing. Revisit in 20 years, and you'll appreciate now more than you do.

It was a perfect storm of contrasting styles and personalities

McEnroe Connors was another good one. I'm sure some great rivalry will come along. There was nothing special about the 70s & 80s that prevents a great rivalry from developing today. But we are more jaded now since we are bombarded with sports marketing and 24-7 sports.

Would've loved a Kobe & LeBron rivalry but Bron kept losing in the LEastern Conference playoffs before creating the Miami super team and by then Kobe was starting to regress as a dominant force in the league in terms of leading the Lakers to Finals and shite like that all that milage he had by that point. Is what it is.

Also i need you to know that “Kobe wasn’t good enough to make the finals with the Lakers” after 45,000 minutes in the league.
While Lebron has played almost 57,000 minutes.
I will be referring back to this post every time you move Lebron down your all-time list for not being able to lead the Lakers through a successful playoff run.
