You’re from BR and you’re worrying about a part of NOLA being safe? shite can happen anywhere, BR or NOLA. I don’t know if that’s a good enough reason to stop living though. Just use your head. That piece of advise applies to everywhere you go in this area of the country.

Bywater is nice. It's true, it's full of hipsters. The architecture is really cool. It's beautiful during the day but when the sun goes down you kind of feel like you need to go inside. That being said, I've lived here all my life (54 years) and I don't ever remember any type of crime problem in Bywater. Of course, you need to be mindful of your surroundings as you are in any large and metropolitan city. Stay closer to the River area and if you cross St. Claude Ave., don't venture into that neighborhood. THAT neighborhood is not the safest. Bon Apetit.

I used to frequent Bud Rips. Never had an issue.

It's become the hot spot for SJW blue haired hipsters to move into like they're doing in every other city in the US. A few years back a family member asked me about Bywater because they had some friends (SJW blue haired hipsters) who wanted to move there from out of state but didn't know anything about New Orleans. My answer rocked their fart sniffing worldview bubble.

My buddy who works in The Bywater calls it The Bywater.

I've never met a New Orleanian who says "Bywater". Everyone says The Bywater even people who live in it, and I have several friends that do.

Park by city park and take an uber. Super easy.
This is dumb. It's easy to park around The Joint. Your "easy" alternative is a helluva lot more complicated.

Bywater today is 50% gay men and 50% hipsters. No lie, it might be the "whitest" part of the city now.
The Joint has gone downhill as of late, IMO.
Also, parking situation down there sucks, it's all on-street.
But you will be fine as long as you act normal.

Ever seen I Am Legend? Just fortify your place and don't leave after sundown.

Tell that to most Nola residents who say THE Bywater.
But to the OP's question, the Bywater is fine. Lotta good restaurants. My main complaint having lived there is that it is hipster central (and a fair amount of gutterpunks who are harmless but annoying), and going back and forth from Uptown can be a nightmare during the week.

OP should have said the area of Bywater

If you don’t like the smell of petruli oil and BO, stay away. Area seems safe in the daytime.
