A lot of kids that age still respect their fathers and listen to them.

True, but daddy still could have threatened to whip his arse if he did and that’s likely what happened here.
Kid got butthurt over something, said he was going to transfer, daddy go wind of it, daddy told him “if you throw the opportunity to play at LSU away, I will beat the shutout of you”, kid stayed put.
