The puddle jumper types actually work really well. They do a good job keeping their head safely out of the water. They are also CG approved.
I have looked at these, just no experience obviously..Was just wondering what others have used

Airhead Infant Nylon Life Jacket is what my FIL got for our 1 y/o son for his birthday. We haven't used it yet, but it's what him and his friends used for their kids growing up.

My kids used the one that had the strap that goes between the strap that goes between the legs, and had a handle on the back, in case the fall in you can pull them back out.

So it intentionally put them face down in the water so you can grab the handle?

Unless you are going out early and late, the life jacket will make him very hot. All the life jackets for that age appear to be made by the same company with different cartoons on them.

A PDF does not keep you floating face down, it keeps then upright in the water, and the strap is up by the collar.

I'd highly recommend taking him to a boating store or somewhere like bass pro and have him try on as many as possible and wear them.
I wouldn't worry about the "safest" or "best" as much as what he actually likes and most importantly what he will actually wear.
Its very hard to get them to fit kids that age well and they HATE to wear them usually. So get him excited about it and make sure it fits. I would not order one online.

Stohlquist always gets reviewed well. That's probably what I'll get my then one year old for the beach house this year.

he isnt going to be on the boat all day. Just something for precaution, when we do take him for a ride

I like Salus PFDs for toddlers. Soft materials and flexible.

Slap some arm floaties on him. I've done research and they are the most effective

This is what I was going to say. My son is almost 5, and this is the type my dad keeps on his boat for him. It’s actually been a while, he may be too big for it now.

This should be your kid’s second summer of swimming lessons.
Why have you not had him taught how to swim, yet?
He's already way behind the birthing pool babies.

My rule is my kids won’t go on a boat until they learn to swim. We have a two year old who can’t swim yet and he will not go on a boat until he can swim.
