Getting back into the gym for the first time in a while... need some ideas/workouts.

Quick rundown. Turned 40, gained several/many lbs. haven’t lifted in prolly 10+ years. Need to cut some weight and put some lean muscle back on for now. I’m still somewhat athletic, I played baseball in college and I put in 10-15 miles in week for cardio. I also do yoglates from time to time.
I’ve kinda read through some of the workout threads, but sill unsure of what to do. I can commit to 3-4 days a week. The diet part I can handle myself and seems to work when I stick to it. I just reach a plateau with no more weight loss short of starving myself.
That being said.... just trying to back into it. Joining a gym again and need a little advice on a workout to start out with for the next couple months.

Sign up for a CrossFit class.
They have the lesser version of it 3 times per week..basically for starters and not the super intense stuff.
If you’re just trying to lose weight and get cut, it’s the best option honestly.
You still workout with weights, get cardio and takes about an hour per session..you’ll sweat your arse off and will see massive improvements from month to month.
In the gym, you’ll just walk around, lift randomly here and there and not make much progress.
Plus I always do better with a coach and other people motivating me forward..

I ain’t doing CrossFit. Im not a newbie to working out man, I lifted from probably 14-30 yrs old. Played ball in college and know what I’m doing. I’m just looking for a workout to start back up with b/c it’s been a while.
I already run and do yoglates... I want to add lifting to get some muscle back on and help shed some of these excess lbs. that I can’t seem to knock off. I’m not worried about getting “cut”.

Start a linear program that is solidly laid out. Greyskull is posted all over here, and it is solid.
I also post about Candito's linear program, which is also very good. Here's a link to a thread:

In this case, basically do the strength/control plan for say a period of 6 weeks?

Sounds like CrossFit would be good for you tbh
Being an ex athlete, the structure of it could reinvigorate old competitive juices that in turn would help you stay committed. Just a thought.

Personally, I'd run it until you can no longer make linear gains, then look towards an intermediate program. As long as you make linear gains, a linear program is good.
It's only when the gains slow that you need to adjust further. Short of that, I've never seen the point of stopping if you're making progress.

Exactly. Dude jumped all over me lol. I’ve also lifted most of my life and was an athlete for all of my life..
CrossFit is that something extra that guys need to stay motivated..the results have been fantastic..couple it with a plant based protein diet, whole grains, fruits etc and the cutting results are incredible.
But do you OP.

Didn’t jump all over you man, I apologize if it came across that way.... just said I’m not doing it. I worked in ortho for years, I’ve seen some bad shite (CrossFit caused) and I’m not paying the going rate for a CrossFit gym.

You can only lead a horse to water, can’t make him drink

It's for the coach mainly but for someone that knows what they want, I don't see the need.

Take it slow at first. People who were athletes and worked out diligently for years often think they can just go in and go balls to the wall.

Yep, if you do a linear program, I'd start lighter than you think you have to and just ride the linear progression as long as it runs.
I came from an athletic background and learning not to push is harder than pushing myself. Be better than me.

Bad idea
If doing CrossFit then eat to preform
