The problem with your idea is you thinking the NBA actually wants to help small market teams

John Wall about to make 40million plus for sitting an NBA season and doing treatment.
Name another place on the planet you can do this?
Uhhh every other major american sport outside of football.
MLB, NHL, MLS and NBA all have guaranteed contracts.

Also the idea that user 50 Tiger from the more sports board can negotiate a labor deal better than the billion dollar owners and the lawyers that represent them makes me laugh

Owners caved imo and now you have this glorified coastal league.
The best teams in the league are the Warriors, Bucks, Raptors, Nuggets, Thunder, and Pacers.
That’s:
Oakland
Milwaukee
Toronto
Denver
Oklahoma City
Indianapolis
That’s hardly a “coastal league”.

Yeah the other part is I don’t understand at all how this would benefit small markets more. The easiest solution to this “problem” is don’t sign dumb guaranteed contracts. I like that MLB and NBA really punish bad front offices for these deals. I don’t see how small market teams are predisposed to signing more bad deals.

You could make the argument that smaller market teams have to pay full price or higher to entice FAs to sign with them. A player might say I will only take the max to play for small market team X, but I will play for less if it's offered by LA/NY/etc. So there could be a situation where a small market would have to overpay for a guy that would accept a more "fair market" contract on a bigger market team.
I agree with you though that I generally like the way it's set up and that being savvy and signing the right guys for the right money is rewarded and signing the wrong guys for the wrong money is punished.

I guess, it doesn’t seem like that’s what has actually happened though.
The problem is that the mega stars like AD/Kawhi are turning down more money with their existing team to take less money elsewhere, seemingly a big market though it hasn’t actually happened yet. That is a hard problem to fix. If you slant the rules hard for existing teams keeping their star players that they’ve drafted I think there could be some unintended consequences down the road.

Problem is this would only effect the bottom of the food chain the Lakers/Celtics of the world are still going to be offering the AD level players fully guaranteed deals so you have the same “issue”

You can make an argument that guaranteed contracts play into larger TV markets hands who can eat the tax for long periods of time due to television contracts, etc.
Maybe make it where free agent contracts aren’t fully guaranteed but extensions are. Gives the player more incentive to stay with their current team instead of teaming up with other stars to form superteams. NBAPA would fight it big time though

can't think of one more obvious solution to help small market teams compete than the ability to be able to get rid of dead weight.
How about small markets not sign marginal players to shitty contracts.

The NFL would still thrive without Brady, Rodgers, and Brees. The NBA would be as popular as MLS without LeBron, Curry, KD, AD, Giannis, Harden, and Westbrook.

Exactly.
The Lakers have sucked for years now.The Knicks have only been relevant for a couple of championship runs in the 70's and a middle 90's push.

wrong, just like NFL and MLB tv/rights contracts are so fat that even the middest market can afford max deals w/o losing a penny.

Thanks to NBA revenue sharing its the bigger markets which have to share their profits among all 30 teams. Lakers , Knicks ,Bulls & Warriors contribute the Lions share.
Read a recent article that 14 of the 30 NBA teams actually lost money before revenue sharing . Big market teams are serving as piggy banks for small markets . And yet they still complain.

To make this attractive, you would need to pay more per year, inflating salaries.

Could you imagine the lebron tears?

NBA is a a players run league, opposite of football which is an owners run league.
