Centuries of European colonial powers stealing their resources. Once granted independence the borders were drawn arbitrarily, initiating ethnic and tribal strife that derailed many economies. Propping up by first-world nations of military dictators as a bulwark against communism in the continent.

More like about seventy to eighty years. For most of the continent, it’s been nearly as long as they’ve been independent as they were under the boot at this point. And there were never clean ways to draw borders, especially with equal access to resources, infrastructure, and ports.

this is bullshite b/c the alternative was creating about 1000 separate countries, and that also requires no international conflict among those 1000 nation states

now this is true, but this (like colonialism) wasn't isolated to Africa and Africa still lags way behind
and it was a necessary evil. do we think SSA countries would have come out more prepared for the modern world had they been under authoritarian communism for 20-30 years? hell many would still be under those dictatorships
