And on top of that he came in super late and still learned the offense and made connections with some of the WRs.
I think Burrow will be one of the top 3 QBs in the SEC if not second to Tua. This offense will grow under his leadership in the offseason while he and Steve E work on some things to advance the offense. Not only that but he will now have a few TEs to throw the ball to as well as some great RBs to hand off to.
This will be one of the deepest OLs, QB, DLs, LBs and WR position that we've had in a very long time. I think we'll be saying the same thing for a couple of years because these positions will not only gain in the depth department but in the quality of depth department as well. That's what makes a team special and that's what takes so long when a teams depth is depleted the way it was before O took over.
In 2 years we might have so much depth that we will be letting highly rated 4*s leave the program and guys who when they leave will actually contribute at other schools. When LSU gets to the point where we don't need to wait for guys who are developing slowly to develop is when we'll be right back where we were in 2006 and 2007. I honestly believe we are on a trajectory to get to that point in 2 years or after the 2021 class.
That's why you stack your QB, OL, DL and LB positions up so that you can create real quality depth and competition so you can let the players who aren't getting it done go while brining in better players to replace them and start over them. When those positions see that type of competition at their spot, they will HAVE to compete harder and become better players from the get go and not hold you hostage because you can't get rid of them anyways so they just do as they please until they're ready.
The skill positions IMO can be replaced much easier every year. Louisiana is typically full of RBs, WRs and DBs. Plus LSU already has this stigma of great DB play here. Not that those positions matter less but more emphasis should be placed on the big 4 QB, OL, DL, and LB. That's where you separate your program IMO and most other professionals opinions. It's slowly coming around and I love to see it.

Great post. +1
I would give another +1 each for mentions of Kadron Boone and James Wright. Those names I haven't heard in a while, literally made me smile with good memories. Great players that were overshadowed by OBJ and Landry. And I still wish Shepherd could have reached his full potential...

Can't remember a QB as tough as Burrow though. Ellington was tough, but Burrow is on another level

We rushed for more tds this year than last.

I was thinking of this the other day with Burrow’s strong ending to the season and glad someone posted it. The numbers are quite similar though mostly leaning in Joe’s favor. The major thing that’s been mentioned is he’s can also run the ball which Mett never could. All that bodes well for him next year.
The offense should be much better around Joe next year year so I expect that plus a full off season with the team should yield a much improved version. Burrow is poised to have a better year than Mett’s 2013 campaign imo and possibly even the best since...JaMarcus or Rohan? How refreshing to actually be comfortable and excited for the QB position heading into the offseason!

Solid OP, and really puts things into perspective. With the talk around Mett having OBJ and Landry in 2012 - imagine if Chase and Marshall can develop into a similar dual threat next year after an offseason with Burrow. Granted, OBJ and Landry had seen a lot more playing time going into 2013 than Chase and Marshall will have going into next year. But the point is that we have no idea what the ceiling is for those guys as of today.
I’d also add that according to Glenn Guilbeau 2019 will be the first year LSU returns an OC and starting QB since 2010. I know a lot of folks here cringe at the thought of Ensminger returning as OC and I’m not trying to start that battle. It does say a lot about the timing of changes at those two positions, though, that it hasn’t happened since 2010.
I do still have concerns about the OL next year. That unit will absolutely be deeper and should perform better than they did this year due to experience alone, but will it be great? Or just better?
All in all though, it’s not often you return 9 starters and 18 from the 2-deep depth chart on one side of the ball.

Why compare to Metttenburger?
He was a rocket arm statue. Not very quick with the feet or the brain. I would easily take Danny Ethling before Meet.
Burrow can throw, run, and get you in the proper play at the line of scrimmage. He is a very good leader on and off the field.
I hope he doesn't become another Meet.

I think the OP is comparing burrow to Mett because Mett was the most recent talented passer we've had and had one of our more productive offenses.

The answer is literally the first sentence in my post. They were both high profile recruits that the fan base had high expectations for. No one was pumped about Danny Etling transferring or even thought he would be starter. Burrow and Mett were both crowned by the public and media as the answer to our qb problems.
Results wise, I address it in the very next paragraph. You appear to fall into that category of a fan who was disappointed with Mett's 2012 but statistically both of his seasons were our best since JaMarcus Russell.

quote:IF Kardell Thomas can make the transition from Louisiana public high school District 6A (That's small school A, not large school AAAAAA) to Big Boy SEC football they will be better. What kind of competition did he go up against in that District? Can he pass block? Can he learn the blocking scheme/reads quickly and execute them? Will he come in to camp in shape and at the correct weight? Atlantic/Pacific Ocean gap between 6A and the SEC.
I do still have concerns about the OL next year. That unit will absolutely be deeper and should perform better than they did this year due to experience alone, but will it be great? Or just better?
If Cole Smith comes in at 300lbs, hungry and wins the Center position, they will be better.
If Cregg can get them in a simpler scheme that they can execute, they will be better.
If they're lucky with the injury situation, they will be better.
No guarantees on any of that, only sunshine pumped in hopes...……….

Thank you for the statistical comparison and contrast. This basically tells me that our current system is slightly better than Les Miles’ 2012 iteration coordinated by Stud with what amounts to slightly lower talent level across the board at the skill positions.
In other words, we are a little better than that.
We were 9th overall in the SEC in total offense in 2018, 4th in the Division and would’ve been 6th in the East. LSU finished 38th in Total Offense. 26th in Total Defense.
There is a ton of room for improvement.

Still blows my mind seeing Mett run for 30 yards against Ole Miss for a TD even though everyone was on the other side of the field, I don’t know how nobody was able to catch him

Kind of similar to the line this year considering different players started every week until the Bama game.

Mett was a lot more raw... the biggest gripe was his total lack of awareness on the rush. We'd see him stand like a statue, unaware, while somebody had a 5 second 45 yd run at him and blow him up.
Burrow doesn't have that issue. He holds the ball, but not nearly as long. And he doesn't look unaware, so much as he looks like he's trying to give the WR as long as he can.
Burrow just looks way ahead of the curve, compared to Mett at this point. Doesn't have the rifle for an arm, but has enough to make the throws he needs to. I could see him being 2nd team All SEC next year (obviously behind Tua).

More like the first game
4/5 OL played every game from after Ole Miss.
Brumsfield played every game from Bama on and Magee started 3/4 games Brumsfield missed at LG.
We had a lot of problems early in the seasons, but realistically our worst OL games were Southeastern, La tech and Ole Miss.
We had all our starters for Auburn.
