Hiked Talladega National Forest last weekend (PIC HEAVY)

Myself and 2 friends completed the Skyway Loop in the Talladega National Forest (Cheaha Wilderness). This loop is actually 3 trails that make the loop (Skyway Trail, Chinnabee Silent Trail and the Pinhoti Trail). The trail was difficult to follow in a lot of areas where there were little to no blazes and due to the leaves covering the trail. The Silent trail was dissapointing because of the amount of trash left behind, especially around Devils Den. I also found that the measurements didn't match up to what was showing on my Garmin as far as distances went.

We are on a trail in the next 2 pics..
Some trails were easier to follow.

Beautiful pictures, BT, especially the scenic overlook. Looks very similar to some of the mountain pics up here. Our Appalachian Mountains are really special. Thanks for sharing.

The scout troop that my three boys were members of hiked this area the first weekend in November for years. There was an opportunity fo cover all age groups here.
The first year scouts would do car camping at High Falls. They could set up camp on Saturday and get a day hike on Sunday by meeting up with the older boys coming into High Falls. They would also fix lunch for the hikers coming off the trail on Sunday.
If we had enough leadership we would offer a 20 miler for the older high school boys by dropping them off prior to getting to the Trailhead at the State Park on the highway.
The majority of the troop would do what we would call going over the top. That was about 12 miles total. It would start at the Trail Head Parking Lot and head up the Pinhoti to McDill Point where the plane wreckage is. Follow the ridge to what is called the Little Caney Head and camp. From the parking lot to Little Caney Head was roughtly 8 miles. That is where the Pinhoti and Chinnabee cross each other. If it had been dry there would hardly be any water to pump or purify for cooking.
Then on Sunday morning get up cook breakfast and head out to High Falls. Little Caney Head to High Falls was about 4 miles.
Great trip but people do leave trash and have packed out more than we brought in almost every time.
Never know what the weather will bring the first weekend in November and have caught snakes on the trail as well as had rain or snow. You just never know!

I’m sure the deer hunters were happy to see you.

Nice pics. I grew up not very far from there (about a mile up the mountain from Camp Mac) and that McDill view is the best around.

In a National Forest? You would mean poachers

Majority of the deer in that area are over hunted. They mainly run dogs, so hunters could care less. OP, this is where I grew up. It was better maintained in the 90s. The economic depression of the late 00s put a strain on state resources, and the park has suffered. From my understanding, there has been a recent effort to improve the area. It is beautiful, and has a ton of potential.

It's legal to hunt on national forests.
OP - Nice pics. I've spent a lot of my life in those hills.

Strain on state resources would have nothing to do with a NATIONAL Forest operated by the Federal government.

Many thousands of hunters enjoying the National Forest at this very moment. You might be thinking of the National Park System.

Maybe he means Cheaha State Park that is within or abuts the national forest.

It says it is a 17.7 mile loop but the Garmin said about 20+ and we took 3 days and 2 nights.

Thanks for sharing the pics! That would be some rocky terrain for my crippled up self to navigate. Looks like fun though.
