Your average 4 bedroom is in the 2400-2800 sqft range. I'd consider anything above 3K' on the low end of "large"

Mine(4br,) is about 3800, don’t consider it to be huge, but there are parts of it I haven’t seen in years, ready to downsize

Over 2500 4BR 3B is bigger than most so would be considered large

We have a 4Br/3Ba that's "only" 2500 sq ft. With only one kid it's a perfect size for us. I wouldn't consider it large at all.

Exactly what we have and it's almost perfect. We don't use or see the 4th bedroom 95% of the year since it on the opposite side of the house than the rest. When the inlaws come in town I'm damn glad we have it and that its on the other side of the house.

Over 4000 SF living area I would consider large.

For myself...2k is large
For a family of four...4k is large

I remembered a school lesson from high school home keeping class that was required. Buy a home that cost your annual salary and plan to pay it off in 20 years. If ya out grow it sell it and by then ya salary should be bigger so bigger house if not live crowded till ya can afford bigger.

If it takes you 20 years to pay off a mortgage that is equal to what you make in a year, you're doing it very wrong. also, that's an absurd rule that you could never follow living in an urban area.
Actually, here is a good safe conservative rule of thumb with regards to how much house can I afford:
1. 15 year conventional fixed rate mortgage
2. 20% minimum down payment
3. Monthly note is no more than 20% of your monthly
TAKE HOME PAY

3,000 sq ft +. I think alot of people buy the largest house they can afford, whether they need it or not.
My sister talked for years about selling their "large" house in suburban Raleigh when the kids were gone so they could buy a condo downtown, where they could walk to bars, restaurants, etc.
But what does she do but ends up buying a larger house further from downtown so the grandkids will stay with them the few times a year they come to town. What a waste.

Not necessarily. They have 1600 SF homes that have "4 bedrooms" but they are each like 8 x 8 haha

My sisters father inlaw has a 2 bedroom house that is 12,000 square feet
The Pennington family that recently sold the huge McMansion on Highland are now building a 2BR / 13000sf house about a block away from their old Highland Rd home. It's a pretty cool house and i expect that it will be finished with the best of everything. When I walked through it, I said, "wait a minute did I miss something...this is only 2 BR??"
One side of it has to be at close to 200' long. The house sits on an incredibly beautiful piece of property (aprox 12-15 acres). The driveway is about 1/4 mile long and you can't even see the house from Highland Rd.

Depends.
My personal residence is 4,800 and is too big. We rarely use half the house.
Our beach house is 3,200 and too small because we always have friends or family visiting.

I’m looking at around 3k for my first home (but I waited a long time). I would say 4500

We have 2600 sf 3br/2ba with two younger kids.
I think another 500sf would be just about perfect. An additional BR and second living area.

Number of bedrooms doesn’t determine square footage. I’ve been in many houses that have 3-4 rooms and barely 1k SF
What’s the point of having 4 bedrooms if none of them have a closet in them?

I don't know what people do with houses over 2000 square feet.
My last house was just 1580 square feet, and we might have consistently used 2/3 of it.
Don't know why most people want the upkeep and cost of a bigger home.

I grew up in a 7500 sq ft house that I thought was just fine and that everybody was about the same.
Now mine is half that and I consider it just fine but there’s no true library or gallery.
