U.S. internet speeds rose nearly 40 percent this year

Finally some good news: The internet is getting faster, especially fixed broadband internet. Broadband download speeds in the U.S. rose 35.8 percent and upload speeds are up 22 percent from last year, according to internet speed-test company Ookla in its latest U.S. broadband report.
The growth in speed is important as the internet undergirds more of our daily lives and the wider economy. As internet service providers continue building out fiber networks around the country, expect speeds to increase, though speeds vary widely by region depending on infrastructure and whether or not an area has fiber.
New Jersey had the highest mean download speed — 121 megabits per second — while Rhode Island had the fastest upload speed — 63 Mbps — in Q2 and Q3 of 2018. Maine had the slowest mean upload and download speeds (50 Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload) of any state. California, the home of Silicon Valley, ranked 17th in downloads and 24th in uploads.

My quick hypothesis is that the millions dead from tax cuts and NN repeal led to less strain on the system?

Yet thousands upon thousands, perhaps millions are locked into ridiculous contracts in one provider only areas, no competition and low data caps. Being held over the barrel to pay whatever they want to charge.
We still are very far behind.
We still are very far behind.

How do you figure that? More money means the pipes flow faster? Seriously?

This should give the near dead some motivation to live.

The USA lags far behind South Korea when it comes to internet download speeds.
OUTRAGEOUS!

Plus, comcast still has data caps. It will get worse. The FCC is a joke.

USA is 7th in broadband speed and 41st in mobile. With as a big a country we have, as i'd say that's pretty damn good.

Our Cox service has a 1TB data cap. We've gone over it once in the year or so we've had it. We stream everything.

It will get better. Competition is going to increase
5G will change everything anyway.

My situtation exactly
I'm paying $80 a month for 12 mbps down and 1 up
Suddenlink cable

1 4k HDR movie can be 80GB alone.

Lol, when I was in Korea in 2013, we paid $40 for 4 meg internet while right off base there was 100 meg for the equivalent of $10

Nobody noticed.

My company (AT&T) is in the process of pulling fiber optic lines into every back alley, side street, and trailer ghetto in South Louisiana. We’re hooking up 1000x1000 hsia with no data caps for around $70/month.
We’re taking customers with current max speeds of 5-10 Mbs and giving them full, symmetrical 1000Mbs. All of that to say U.S. hsia numbers should (finally) start catching up with the rest of the civilized world.
Unfortunately, La Casa de FCP is still a long ways away from getting fiber—although if they get it within a mile from here, I’ll figure out how to get it to the Ponderosa.

All of that doesn’t matter if the source doesn’t have the bandwidth for the traffic and limits the output speeds to handle the traffic. That is how it works.

To stream? No it’s not

My guess is you have zero insight into this outside of some biased article you read online. I have a greater insight into what these so called one provider areas are actually experiencing than you do. I can assure you of that. You don’t know what you’re talking about and instead use an obscure, outlier example to fit your narrative.
