Oddly, it’s the only number one from that year that I hadn’t heard before.

Stupid site doesn't give the full name; it's Gary "U.S." Bonds, who had a couple of R&B hits in the late 50s/early 60s-- "Quarter to Three" and "New Orleans" ("you know every Southern belle is a Mississippi Queen, down the Mississippi down in New Orleans"). He also had a comeback hit in 1981, "This Little Girl (is Mine)"
