What's a hunting lesson you had to learn the hard way and would go back and tell your younger self?

Never forget toilet paper.

When taking a doe early in the season, always shoot the largest one and not one of the yearlings behind her that may be a buttonhead.

Being still and quiet is better than camo.

You didn't specify what kind of hunting.

When crossing a fence lean your gun up next to the post and not on the barbed wire (or bob wire like they say back there).

Wear ear plugs.
Make sure you didn't leave the boat keys at home.
Don't leave your gun in a wet gun case.

this is great advice, also wipe your gun down with oil before putting in the case after hunting in the rain.

Dont tell Uncle exactly where you killed that big boy. He will religiously hunt whatever made up spot you told him.

The drag out is twice as far as the walk in.

If you think you have just enough gas in the boat or ATV to get there and back, YOU DONT.

A lot about how to dress.
I can remember busting arse through thick swamp on freezing mornings with all my clothes on, stripping them off once we got there because we got hot, then freezing my arse off.
When striking off on a cold day, I try to be cold on the walk in initially as I’ll soon warm up and not overheat.
That and which clothes (cotton vs wool, wearing blue jeans and pajama pants back in the day, etc) would have been good to know.
