re: 300 BLK Bolt Action

at 100 yards, would you rather shoot at a 200" buck with a round that is designed to be suppressed or would you want to shoot at it with a round that was meant to kill at a distance. Keep in mind the piss poor ballistics of 300 blk when compared to other rounds. Take into account wind deflection, up/down, and total ft/lbs at 100 yards.

I meant in regards to price. I think I recall a scout version of one the rifles I was looking at was $200 more than the regular version.

Dont get either one. Theres no benefit to an oddball caliber and whoever told you that you needed a 300 blackout for a dedicated deer rifle is an idiot. Get a bolt action (any one, there are some very good cheap ones out there) in .308, .270 or .30-06 All 3 are fantastic deer calibers from 0 to as far as you can hit them.
For 150 yards and less a lever action .30-30 is a great choice as well and used ones are available by the truckload. I hunt with mine a lot just because the rifle is compact and carries very well.

.450 bushmaster is what your looking for. I bought the Bushmaster upper and put it on a lower I had lying around and its dead nutz at 100 yards. Will touch holes at a hundred. It’s a 16” barrel, light, and drops the hammer on deer. Wouldn’t hesitate to take a 200 yard shot.

Not quite. This is beside the point of the OP, where 6.5 grendel would do the job well. These charts are 200 yard zero but you get the idea.

They make a 762x39 in a RUGER American Bolt action I think. Good round out to a 100 yds and ammo is easy to come by.

You know, 6.5 Grendel is a pain in the dick with FTF. Bell shaped cartridge is a wee bit of a hassle. That round is obsolete. Better to go with the up and coming 6.5 creedmore

Ah. Didn’t pick that up. Sorry.
The ruger American predator is a very inexpensive rifle and has a good trigger.
The magpul stock makes it much more but I do really like the stock.

FIrst, why would you want ANY rifle that's limited to 100 yards (and the BLK doesn't even do that well)? Get a real deer round. They do a great job from the muzzle all the way out 300 and further. This goddamn black rifle trend is destroying peoples brains.

It is all a real wash at these shorter distances. The grendel would weigh less and have less kick. I have no idea on the FTF with it in bolts though.
My advice- take the money and update the optics on your .270 and use that.

Is OP considering a Grendel as well?
Again, what would be the advantage in ANY of the "AR rounds" in a bolt action, outside of the .308 of course. By Ar rounds I mean the Grendel, BLK, 223........
Am I missing something? I've a lot of people talk about letting kids hunt with the BLK. I get that the adjustability of the AR is a benefit to youth shooters, but the few times I've looked up the numbers on the BLK it looked horribly under powered. Makes sense considering what it originated for. Am I off base here?

Can’t believe it took two pages for someone to mention a 30-30. More deer killed with that caliber than probably any other.

What are you pointing out? Your charts don't compare the same info. Honestly, I don't even know what the .308 chart is showing. The 6.5G drops less, bucks the wind better and loses less velocity by percentage over distance than the .308. That's what I meant by "out flies".
I'm not saying the OP should get a 6.5 Grendel versus a .308 if choosing a bolt action rifle because of the increased energy of the .308. I was refuting your claim the 6.5 G needs a lot of barrel to best the .308 in the ballistic department when the only area it lacks the .308 is terminal ballistics/energy delivered, which the 6.5G will never best no matter how long the barrel because the bullet is substantially lighter and the case of the .308 substantially larger.
As far as deer hunting goes nothing in the AR platform best a traditional bolt gun. A bolt gun is lighter, holds more than enough ammo for a one shot trip, is available is calibers that fly decent and pack more punch than an AR caliber, is inherently more accurate than a gas gun, etc.
Ball ammo is easy to come by.

I agree with the no 300blk bolt gun camp. To me that belongs in a short barrel AR platform with a suppressor. Now in a rifle with a can it would be stupid quiet...but still Id go with something else for a "hunting" rifle.
Based of what calibers you have already and just wanted a new rifle I would look at the .308 or a 30-06. To me those are as standard as having a .223 AR. Once you have one of those, then look at the off path rounds like 6.5s IMO. .308 and 30-06 hunting rounds are awash everywhere always.

OP went somewhere ate up with the tactical it sounds like.

Nothing wrong with that. I will say if he wanted a bolt gun and was gonna keep it suppressed for shooting off the back porch 300aac would be fine. But it isn't the greatest round besides the fact it is the best to suppress.

Huh? .280 has to be one of the most capable standard long action calibers ever invented. And every manufacturer loads for it these days.

OP said he wants a gun for under 100 yards, everyone is giving him 200+ yard guns. He should't be looking for a bolt action gun either IMO unless its something like a 20 gauge slug gun.
For close thick woods shots, i'd get a semi auto, lever action, etc. 30-30 is perfect for this.

I routinely shoot deer under 100 yards with my .280 with 165 grain pills. They die quickly.
Truthfully, OP should look at a .308 or 7mm-08. Both more capable than a 30-30.
