Florida posters: Why is Bill Nelson in a tight senate race?

Looking at his 3 previous senate elections in florida, he did very well.
Won by 5 knocking off a GOP incumbent in 2000.
Won 60% of the vote in 2006
Won by 13 points in 2012 despite obama winning state by 1 point.
He on face value appears to be a moderate, sensible dem with a nice background as veteran and astronaut. He has never struggled before until now?
Is this more about scott running a good campaign?

Bc Scott is a good Gov and Nelson blows......voters are finally seeing it

Rick Scott has been running some extremely effective ads about how Nelson has been in office since the early 70s. On top of that Scott is a very strong candidate and is doing a bang up job on the panhandle right now. I think Scott is going to win by 5 to 7 points.

Rick scott is the current governor of Florida and is seen in a mostly positive light in that state.
Also, the democratic party has changed A LOT in the past 6 years.

I’m not a Florida resident, but it’s obvious that this is the first real challenger that he’s faced in a re-election bid.

Florida is a hard state to predict. The southern part is reliably Dem, the northern part is reliably GOP.
Scott has a good track record as Governor, state has done well under his watch and no major scandals.
The key will be how many Puerto Ricans can the Dems ship into Osceola County before November 6?

And even though Florida has a large hispanic population, a lot of them are Cubans who primarily vote Republican for obvious reasons

Might be because people are just now finding out that he bumped Greg Jarvis from the Columbia mission using his political clout and Jarvis ended up on the Challenger mission. Yes, THAT Challenger mission.

Nelson has done nothing as our Florida Senator. He is seen as a rubber stamp democrat and the democratic party is not looking too good right now. He is old as the hills and his ads reflect that.
Scott has never been seen as a party hack and has done a OK job as Gov.

Very true. The only northern counties that were blue in the presidential election are historically blue. That would be Leon (Tallahassee) and its western neighbor Gadsden County.

I get why Nelson is close with Scott....name recognition, people know the guy and longevity and coming from a time when there were still blue dog Southern Democrats, that I get?
What I don't get is how the DeSantis?Gillum race is seen as so tight. This Gillum guy is a mediocre mayor from one of the smaller cities in the state, I din't get (or believe) he's out in front of DeSantis

I think he and Ruth Bader Ginsburg are both feeling the cold breeze of the grim reaper. He looks like a skeleton.

BC muh blue wave is a farce

Everything about Nelson seems to indicate he doesn't even want to be a Senator anymore and is just going through the motions.

He isn’t though. Votes lockstep with the democrats

Hopefully the hurricane doesn't suppress turn out in the panhandle.

But you are right about how tight Gillum and Desantis are. I suppose its all the NY Cali money propping Gillum up. However i think the GOP initially ( i hope initially ....) took this as a walk over. I have heard, on various occassions, people with clout refer to Gilum as the GOPs ideal candidate.

But Bill's an Astronaut
Posted on 10/15/18 at 1:48 pm to OchoDedos
Using political clout to bump someone else off a mission who ends up dying on Challenger as a result kind of nullifies the astronaut angle.
