Yeah, the government will give them money, food stamps, a phone, housing help, Medicaid. Those programs should be enough to keep the bulk of the homeless off the streets.
Here in Seattle, the problem only gets worse as they throw more and more money at it. It's almost as if making it easier to be homeless encourages more homelessness.

These frickers are full is shite. I know, I see them. There are some reallly mentally fricked up homeless people that need serious mental help.
That’s the number 1 issue with the homeless. The mental health of this nation is an epidemic and is going to be a major war that will cost US tax payers billions forever unless we do something about it.
The second issue with the homeless is allowing the fricking panhandling at every fricking corner.
I pass down Earhart by the bus station every morning at 0630 am and the homeless camps are out of control.
Then on my way back home at 0745 I see the bus station full of homeless getting off buses and trains.
Then pass by the Superdome, underneath the overpass they are all sitting around these homeless camps sitting on laptops, cell phones, iPads, etc.
It’s a bullshite and frick them.
Get your shite together and get a job.
Get off drugs.
If you’re fricked up in the head, seek help.
I’m tired of giving you fricking bums my money.
Go find a church and ask God for guidance

Every city has always had "urban outdoorsmen" who prefer that separated-from-society lifestyle. They used to be called hoboes.
With the decline of funding for mental health treatment and the advent of the drug culture, urban outdoorsmen have competition. They don't like it.
I was once part of a survey team in metro Atlanta that sought out and interviewed thousands of homeless people. The vast majority were men and their biggest complaint was that so many people wanted to "help them out of their misery." They just wanted to be left alone.
Those were the urban outdoorsmen, of course. The druggies and the mentally ill were different stories altogether. The druggies made me mad but the mentally ill made me sad.
The druggies weren't homeless at all. They were posers who played upon the sympathies of good people to give them money that they then used to buy drugs.
The mentally ill were so pitiful. Most of them had been abandoned by relatives or turned out by government agencies after funding was cut. They seemed lost and lonely. It's sad to see so many people thrown to the curb.

Squattheplanet.com is their forum. Threads on people coming to New Orleans, road stories, how to beg and fly signs, how to shoplift etc. Interesting alternative reading.

I carry a stack of Dick Nixon's $20 bills and pass those out.

It's a strange concept huh? Not forcing people to be self-reliant breeds more dependency and irresponsible decision making.

Homeless shanty, shitting on sidewalks, masterbating in public, open drug use...
seems like a good trade for some statues.

Have you seen HW 59 overpasses in Houston? Not sure why a city allows these people to run off the tax paying citizens. There has to be a solution. Maybe more concentrated emcampments on the outskirts.

Ya'll need another hurricane to wash then all away

Yeah they’re ridiculous in downtown houston too. The normal folk walk through the tunnels.

There are certain areas up here where it's becoming a problem. One idea was to force panhandlers to buy a license in order to do so. That way the police can arrest them if they don't have the license and they can be fined. That way whatever money they're getting from people isn't worth it or the trouble. Hopefully that gets them to go to to San Fran or some other s hole where they don't mind.

Sounds like you and your Republican neighbors should vote more often

There has been an explosion of street people in recent years, and I just can’t believe it’s all a result of closing the mental health facilities. Opioid abuse is probably the main factor.
I would think drug addiction just in general is a bigger factor than mental illness.

I saw my first homeless person in Nola. Years ago by what use to be the World Trade Center. Freaked me out.

I think it has fallen off a bit lately, considering that they had a lighted Christmas tree a few years ago.
It was really nicely decorated.

Weren’t the statues removed? I thought that was gonna fix all of New Orleans’ issues.
