Disagree completely. If I’m fishing within 2 miles of land all I worry about is my phone if I’m fishing an area with service which is most of the lower 48 bodies of water. A marine portable radio is just one more unreliable thing to need batteries and that corrosion gets to. It’s one more thing to make ‘handy’ in case of an emergency and store somewhere. Keep your phone battery charged and accessible and that’s all you really need.
I’m not saying portable vhf is a bad idea at all I’m just saying I don’t think it’s necessary.
