I think part of the issue is audience. Would younger generations flock to see movies when they have no cencept of the time period and can’t relate to the brutish nature of Bond as a sexist, mysoginistic dinosaur?

Mysogynistic dinosaur

Bond adores women the way single manly-men do - even in the often-misguided current climate . . . and not in the Harvey way. Real men don't act that way - only losers, and Connery's Bond is not a loser. If he saw something he wanted, he went after it, and they reciprocated. It didn't come from prejudice or power, but of mutual attraction.

quote:

no concept of the time period

As for younger audiences . . . Indiana Jones in a great example of creating conditions for a great (manly) character - and series - out of present time. Give it a killer criminal (Nazis or, in Bond's case, the Russkies -who are prime to be smeared - or Spectre) and you have a great start.

I understand what you're saying but a very large part of what defined a Bond movie were the gadgets. It was a driving force in the continuation of the series. Anticipation of what new car he was going to drive or what new tech Q was going to come up with is what helped drive audience's interest.

None of that will work in a period piece.

Can you spin a good spy yarn set in the 60's? Yeah, sure, absolutely. But would it be the start of "Bond" series people will continually want to invest in? I dont know about that.

I think if done right, "Retro-Tech", could come across as charming and nostalgic if it were used to move the story along and not have the move based on it...The old "Homing Device in the Shoe" or the famous "Bond Watch" are all simple gadgets that didn't rely alot. The Bond "Spy-Car" has always been the big piece of Q-Branch tech and I think the Bond Films of the modern era have become more of an info-mercial than a need piece of MI5 tech...

If they wanted to test the interest perhaps they could a small "vignette" good for 5-10 minutes they could be shown before a regular Bond film or in the making of a regular Bond film have a story that requires a number of flash-backs that would introduce this "retro-bond"...

I still think it could work when I think of movie like X-Men First Class introduced a new and younger Professor X and Magneto during the Cuban Missile crisis...

I realize non of this will ever happen, but it's fun to discuss.

The worst thing that happened to modern Bond film that I alluded to in this commentary is how Bond Films have become shameless infomercials inundated with product placement which has become so obvious that it's a bit of a turnoff

i agree with the films needing to be more character and plot driven. Skyfall was great in that regard, and Spectre likely could have been if not for the falling out at Sony during production. It seems like it has some good parts just thrown together.

The real blueprint for a good film that is a healthy dose of new and old is Casino Royale. I am completely biased to it as a personal favorite, but I try to overlook and see what makes it objectively good, and it has a lot of the elements that made the old films good too. With the exception of the 2006ish cell phones, the movie is almost timeless when you watch it, which is a common trait for a great Bond flick: character driven, straightforward plot, gadget-Mcguffins to a minimum, etc.

Good comments...I agree.

I was thinking as I am enjoying the Bond Marathon on Starz this month that there is one really big way they could pull off a retro-Bond with all of the political incorrectness, misogyny and innuendo......Let Quentin Tarantino have the reins..He is a student of that era as is reflected in many of his films and people pretty have permission to allow anything to go in a Tarantino film....

Quentin Tarantino could make one hell of a 60's theme Bond film and would have the budget to make it the right way....I think his casting would be perfect and he would even to go so far as to get someone like Tom Jones, Carly Simmon or even Shirley Bassey to so the score if they are able to which was always a huge part of the Bond Films...

This is a fun discussion...very entertaining.

A plot set in the Caribbean would work well, playing off of tGOAT Thunderball.

I'm way more of a fan of the current brooding gritty Bond with an actor who is legit athletic. The thought that Roger Moore could kick someone's arse isn't compelling.

This.

Modern audiences can't sit still long enough to enjoy the nuisances and buildup of dialogue.

They need constant mindless action sequences to keep entertained.
