Just sat through an interesting "Lunch and Learn" on the welfare system

Learned a few things.
Over half of children are in a home that receives welfare. Some counties in Mississippi are close to 90%.
Was told an anecdotical story of a girl who grew up on welfare. She married a guy that made good money and got pregnant. She did not qualify for benefits because of her husbands income. Her two sisters had received everything for free and she just had assumed that she would as well. Point being is it is engrained in their heads that this is how the world works.
In rural areas of Mississippi, hospitals just assume everyone is a Medicare patient because non-governmental insurance is used so infrequently.
EBT cards actually have cut down on fraud significantly. When actual food stamps were used, it was a mess. There is still fraud, but not near the same levels. Unfortunately, the cards have erased the stigma that once existed.
A single mom with two kids can rack up thousands of dollars a month in benefits, and they know how to work the system. The example that was used was that this mom could easily get $700 in benefits between EBT, Medicare and subsidized rent
If she were to go to get a minimum wage job, she would bring home about $200 a week. Daycare for two kids on the cheap end would be $150 a week, and she would probably see her welfare benefits cut tremendously. She actually loses money by working.
These policies have enslaved millions and it is only getting worse. Worse yet, the speaker said that she wished it was an elaborate design by an elite socialist regime - but working in the system, she is 100% confident that its just government passing short term legislation without considering long term damages - and it has gotten to this over time.

Been like this for years. Those policies create baby mama's with no man in the house. But the democrats "care"

it's called the welfare cliff and it's a very real thing (and why the black market is so ingrained in the community mentality)

Issue is is that everyone is going to kick the "eliminate perpetual welfare" can down the road. If there is one thing this current administration could have the gall to do, more than any other, it would be to end this society crippling policy.

The welfare state is not a sustainable model of government. I'm just not sure how we can fix it at this point. Especially when they are going to drum up fake charges against anyone who tries.

There is some truth to this, but it's not a good life. The benefits diminish with each child too, as they should.
The real problem is the no man's land between qualifying for aid and the phase-out of that aid. You're not incentivized to actually work unless you're going to improve your situation dramatically.

many years ago I worked in the Department of Social Services.
couple things I have witnessed first hand -
-fraud is more common than legitimacy
-recipients (called clients) are qualified without much digging into the factual nature of their claims because if the Department didn't utilize the dedicated funds then the amount allocated would decrease the following year
-HUGE entitlement mentality of many of the applicants and recipients
-"God will provide" is the most common answer for "how do you pay your bills?"
- "Have a blessed day" came from some of the worst offenders haahahahah
-the number of women in the system with multiple kids from multiple sperm donors is astounding
-the most common question "they wanna give me more hours at work, how much is that gonna cut my benefits?" and the next week they quit
I only worked in that Department for 3 years, but it was enough to see it up close and personal.

A very easy and fruitful first step would be to end the nonsense that not only discourages work, but makes it dam near impossible. You should never lose more in benefit than you make working. For every $1 of income, reduce benefits by $.50. ALWAYS create a positive incentive to work. This would at least get the folks who actually want to work moving towards independence.

It is almost like there is some force that wants to encourage unfettered breeding of the lower easily manipulated classes.
We could find out more if we could just figure who these folks tend to vote for

Didn't Japan cut their welfare when they realized it was too close to the bottom rung?
All welfare should be work based. Either volunteer 40 hours a week or die.
Was it Maine that instituted the volunteer clause and welfare recipients dropped 80%.
How horrible is that? Not willing to do even 20 hours of volunteering a week. Honestly don't care if they starve.
Hell, if you refuse volunteer work then nothing more than a sack of rice and beans every 2 weeks. You won't die but it isn't my purpose in life to give you a comfortable living if you refuse to work.

and here's the kicker. they are OK with this.....until they see whitey get nice stuff. or uncle tom leave the farm to improve their quality of life. its like they don't have that choice!!!! its sad but its definitely ingrained into their communities and a way of life, but its my honky arse fault.

The fact that you can be 100% dependent on Govt assistance and have a home, AC, a car, nice TV's, cell phone, be 100lbs overweight (and have 3 overweight kids) isn't a recipe for success.

Pull your own weight so when bad times come you can still operate.

This times a bazillion.
No one crafts legislation like this with the intent to make people into government addicts, they look at it as "what would *I* need in order to recover from this". The problem is that their point of view enables those that seek to abuse the system.
Another poor point of view issue is that the more use a program gets, the more successful it is deemed to be. The more successful it is, the more it gets expanded (because if X is great then X+1 will be even better!). The problem is the "success" is people getting into the program and never leaving it (mainly because there's no weaning-off process).

Couldn't agree more. Rather than cut benefits, don't penalize people for working so they can try to get off benefits.
It's human nature and basic economics. Disability companies have done this for years so that folks would get off benefits and back to work. They never, ever, reduce the disability benefit by more than 50% of return-to-work wages.

It is more black for sure, but white folks are absolutely pumping out babies and leeching off the government as well. It's a national problem.

I think you're giving the politicians too much credit. I believe there are many who do exactly that
