Lots of litigation about celexa lexapro particularly for use in children re suicide

Uh, if a kid is on those drugs they are depressed or have other issues so of course they will be more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

Trial lawyers gonna trial lawyer though.

Thats a tough one but I’m with you on the grades. If the only reason for taking it is to do better in school and it takes away something from her personality I wouldn’t do it. Who cares if she makes straight A’s?

Is this diagnosis from a pediatric psychiatrist? Is the script coming from them? A “pain in the arse sometimes”, are they verbal and just being a shite, or nonverbal and having meltdowns/stimming a lot?

if you do decide to dose her, know that withdrawal from lexapro is a muthaf'ckr!!!! (brain shocks, whomp whomps, etc.)

i'd see a nutritionist. there is some promising work with gut biome, inflamation, processed sugar/carbs, ketogenic diet, etc. might take some serious research to find the right info.

if i can remember the joe rogan podcasts with dom d'agastino, or ronda patrick, or chris kresser have some good info on dietary trials that have some effect on autism.

might also want to check out podcasts on heavy metal toxicity as a cause.

if i had a child with autism i'd try to eliminate stuff from the system than add more stuff. just a thought

is she having severe anxiety? That is my guess as to why it would be prescribed.

My son is severely autistic. Until he has the vocabulary to explain to me what his baseline emotions and thoughts are, I’m not putting him in a chemical straight jacket.

yes, allegedly one of the better ones in Bham, he is on staff at Mitchell's Place

yes

she gets worked up sometimes and it can take up to an hour to calm her down

She is aggressive at school, they have separated her from the regular class for much of the day (2nd grade)

She throws thins sometomes

Sometimes she masterbates (or stimulates herself), we call it "private time" and encourage her to go to a private place

Recently, she has de used that "hands in PA ts" is her new thing, stimulating or not...

BUT, she is highly intelligent, just has a hard time staying focused or following direction

She can read and write, but is below grade level

She requires a full time aide at school

So I know we need to do something, I just hate the idea of the drugs

Lexapro is pretty mild as far as SSRIs are concerned and you’ll have no idea if they are going to help or hurt unless she tries them but that’s only a call you can make. The SNRI’s like Effexor have a much worse side effect profile. There’s a lot of meds coming through the pipeline to treat autism so don’t feel pressured to act now unless she’s really having problems.

As mentioned, lexapro is pretty benign. You paid the psychiatrist money for his/her opinion, why not take the advice that you paid for?

I would give it 3 to 4 weeks to see if there is any change. If there aew intolerable side effects you could stop it with no risks of permanent issues

frick no you're not.

Friend of ours daughter is pretty high functioning autistic. School was tough for her but she's pretty normal just awkward.

Last year they started homeschool through Louisiana program and they supplied a laptop for then to do coursework.

She's done very well and is very intelligent. Wants to take some college courses at home as well and get ready for campuses in a few years and have some under her belt.

Something to think about. It would me a sacrifice. My wife quit teaching to homeschool ours last year and it's been awesome.

Your father instincts are NOT to be ignored. Good job dad.

I'm pretty sure they wanted to go stronger but my attitude caused then to reduce what they might have otherwise prescribed...

For my daughter, it (citalopram/celexa) helped with limiting meltdowns and OCD behavior (having to shut every door/dresser drawer). But all kids react differently. I would think a 6-8 week trial would be reasonable.

this is pretty much where we are

I came here hoping to hear from people with similar experience and more knowledge than me, I feel like I did get that. Very much appreciate the responses, insights and info

The suicide lawsuits sure got my attention...

My kid wouldn’t have the cognitive capacity to know how to commit suicide. But she seems to do well on it.

I actually suggested this

The wife is starting year 23 as a teacher for Hoover, this year and 2 more and we get 80% of her income and insurance for life

Still wouldn't mind seeing her take a year or 2 leave of absense though...
