Rifle for 13 & 11 year old - Update page 5

My boys are getting into hunting and I was never a hunter. Looking for a decent rifle that will not break bank but still do the job. Looking at a Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmoor. Looking at it due to lower recoil. Would like some suggestions especially for someone who is not really that knowledgeable about rifles.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I don’t know much about the 6.5. But 11 and 13 year old boys should be able to handle a 308 or 270 easily. And they will continue to get bigger.
I wouldn’t limit the caliber because of their age.

I think I was about 11 or 12 when my dad got me my 30-06. I still have it to this day and it shoots like a dream. Remington 700. I had replace the trigger, but that it.
My wife shoots a 25-06, and she loves it. Sweet shooting little gun.

This.. I’m about to pull the trigger on a youth .308 for my boy whom is 9 and not heavy set. Plan is to let him use reduced recoil rounds till he gets comfortable. Can’t beat a .30cal imo.

I got my son a savage axis .308 when he was 11 and never worried about reduced recoil or anything like that. They just really don’t kick that hard.

Thank goodness. I am not sure I would recommend a Remington 700 for any child.

My 10 year old daughter shoots a .308 and 13 year old son shoots a .270. Both have been great guns but I’d choose one or the other probably the .308 so you only have to buy 1 type of ammo. Just makes it easier.

7mm-08 is what my 11 year old shoots. Savage Axis II XP 7mm-08 LINK They make a youth model but it is not available with the acutrigger and the trigger pull is pretty heavy on the youth model.
I bought my son the exact same rifle. I put a leupold scope on it and both of us love it. I shoot a 30-06, but wouldn’t hesitate taking his rifle on a hunt. It’s a nice gun and caliber.
And I agree 100% on the accu trigger. Savage sells a cheaper version of the axis without that trigger and I wouldn’t go that route. Spend the little extra and get the accu trigger.

I got an email this week for Tikka T3 rifles under $400 for some models and calibers.

Some good advice already given in here. Don’t get a 6.5 creed and I say that as an owner of one. It’s a really popular round right now but mostly because of long range shooting, ammo is a bit harder to find off the shelf and it’s always going to be more expensive.
Stick with a traditional caliber and don’t be afraid of getting something that might be just a bit too big for them at current age, they will grow into it and you can usually buy recoil reduced rounds.
I’d look at .243, .308, 7mm-08, or a .270
Any of the big brand names will serve you well: browning, savage, Remington, Ruger, etc.

Thanks for the info. My oldest shot his cousins .270 without any issues. My youngest just seems scared of recoil right now. Should I get gun without scope and buy scope or buy one of the RTH rifles that come with scope. Again thanks for info.

7mm-08 or .243 either one will do the deal. Youth Model 7, with the right bullets it’s a shooter right out of the box

How far will they be shooting? Mine use an old Marlin 30-30 that has worked wonders but they're a little younger than yours. Its compact and has little recoil.
Like others have said, a .308, 7mm-08 or .270 should be fine for them.

Next question. In Baton Rouge, so what is a good place to purchase. Not to sure about purchasing online. Hebert Guns, Bowie, Spillway Sportsman, BassPro, Cabela's.

7mm-08. I started shooting it at age 9 and have probably killed 50 deer with it.

Probably about 100 yds at most with my 3 stands. I have small food plot for one where longest shot would be 50 yds. I plan to bow hunting this stand.

Lol, I see 6.5 Creed at every Walmart I go to and it costs just as much as .308.

Ya, hornady has some cheap 6.5 hunting ammo online as well.
I saw it somewhere a week or so ago for like $14/box I think.
